Hey guys, maybe you can help me track down this noise.

Truck is a 2018 with a 5.7, 77000 miles on it. Yesterday morning and this morning I am hearing a pretty loud "ticking" coming from the head area on the driver side. Temps were in the teens both mornings. I've always noticed this engine sounds a bit like a sewing machine, but this is definitely different. The sound increases and decreases in tempo with engine RPM. The sound sticks around for at least 20-30 minutes after startup. It doesnt seem to increase or decrease in sound level as the engine warms up. When it goes away, it just stops suddenly and it's gone. No gradual decrease in sound (not that I've been able to discern anyway). One more thing that seems weird about this is that yesterday it started making the noise as soon as I started the truck. This morning, it didnt start making the noise until a few minutes after the truck was started. Yesterday it made the noise for at least 30 minutes during the entire trip. I parked the truck and it sat for about 1.5 hours and when I started it again, no noise. This morning it stopped making the noise on my drive in to work and had gone away before I got to my office.

The truck has been to the dealership for all service and oil changes so far. Recently they replaced the valve cover gasket on the passenger side but I wouldn't think this is related. I'm going to check the oil level today and make sure it's not low but pressure seems to be good and there's no warning lights on.

My first thoughts were perhaps an exhaust leak on the manifold or some part of the head not being lubed well enough on the drivers side. It's definitely emanating from the drivers side head area. Here's a video.

That sounds a lot like lifter tick. My escape does something similar, but it goes away quite a bit once oil circulates for a few minutes, and almost vanishes once at operating temp. Don't think the 5.7 will have this issue but theres a rare failure case with the escape DOHC V6 where the cam cap bolts loosen up, I checked mine and got 1/8th turn on them for a couple bolts, and my lifter tick decreased a bit. If you're handy and want to try pulling the valve cover to check, wouldn't be a bad idea. I need to check the valve lash on my escape but it's had the tick for thousands of miles (pretty minor) and has caused zero issues so far.

Edit: wouldn't be a bad idea at all to check if your timing chain tensioners are still tight, those do wear out, but at 77k miles that's a little unheard of. Worth a look if you're able to without a lot of trouble, if you decide to pull the valve cover.
