Hey All - I recently changed the ATF on my 2011 TRD. It was the correct fluid (WS) and amount (2.1 quarts). Now, it takes a few miles for everything to "warm up" otherwise the trans appears to slip a bit in 2nd or 3rd gear. Is there anything electronically that should be done when changing the ATF? Any reprogramming? All I have done is change the fluids so not sure what would be needed...seems odd it would require anything like this?

Did you check the level with it at the correct temperature?

Hey all - thanks for the replies. I did check when fully warmed up and it was slowly coming out the overflow plug. From the manual it said 2.1 quarts and they confirmed at the dealership. As far as procedure, I have a hand pump that I use to pump it into the overflow hole. So is everyone thinking it’s just not enough fluid?

Where are you getting 2.1 quarts from as it relates to the transmission?

The entire trans holds about 12 quarts and the pan holds about 4.

99.9% certain you have a fluid level(either too much or too little) problem.

2.1 for the pan was from the manual and the dealership confirmed when I went to purchase the WS fluid. I guess they were wrong…???

I’m confused when you say “overflow”. There is a drain plug, a check plug, and a fill plug. They should have all been utilized at different stages of the process. Agree with everyone there is no circumstance where 2 qts would be the proper amount to refill anything. If you were trying to fill the trans through the check plug, I could see where that would be a disaster.

I get 4 every time I drained the pan.

This is for a 5.7 liter V8. There is only a drain plug and the check/fill plug.

There is also a fill plug further up. What everyone here is saying is correct, you should have gotten almost 4 quarts out. Its possible you have a leak, or it was underfilled to begin with.

Look on the driver’s side towards the front above the pan. The bolt head has “WS” stamped on it.

You must have the 6 speed? The fill plug is up on the drivers side of the transmission. With that said, if you filled it through the check the tube I guess I don't see why that wouldn't work as long as the level was properly checked still. And you went through the whole shifting procedure and everything and pinned the thermostat open?

Your symptoms and experience just really sound like the fluid level is wrong, and hopefully that's all it is since the alternative is far worse. I would check the fluid again, maybe start off with an extra few ounces of fluid in it first so it's slightly overfilled and then check the level again.

Hey All - I made a trip to the local Toyota dealership and bought two more quarts of ATF WS. I used the actual filler plug this time (haha) and took it for a test drive. No slippage! All is well.

Thanks to everyone for their advice and input(s)!!! Kind of concerning, though, that the Hanes manual said it would take 2.1 quarts and the dealership agreed (maybe don't use this dealership anymore?).

Here's a bit of a primer for the OP on how the process should be done.

very strange seeing as how even the differentials take more than that amount.

In the manuals, Toyota even had the ATF amount wrong for the first gen Tundras. So, I honestly don't trust what Toyota says anymore with regards to exact ATF amounts, and its not surprising that its published incorrectly for the 2007+ Tundras. I don't remember the numbers, but it was a similar in that the book showed half the fluid that the transmission actually needed.

Do the published drain, refill, and fluid level check procedure and you'll be ok.
