This is normal. Would you rather it alert you when it's near sucking fumes? Worst case, you don't pay attention to it. Got on a highway that's desolate. Then the light came on and you had an actual range of 10-15 miles. That may not make it to the next stop. BUT having 4-5 gallons in reserve, you panic when the light comes on but you start looking for the next stop hoping it's within the next 75 miles. You can drive for a while after the light comes on. In my 19, it stayed on 0 or 1 miles till empty for a couple miles and then just said low fuel. If you wanted to see how far you can go, get a 5gal jug of gas and record how many miles you go till it dies.

I believe it’s also associated with the geometry of the tank. That sucker is like 7 1/2 feet long. An inch of fuel in the bottom sloshing around and sucking air into the fuel pump is still probably several gallons of gas.
