Build/shipping of my truck is confirmed but, apparently when I put the deposit down I said 4x4 is first choice, 4x2 is second choice and they are confirming a 4x2. It is a 2023 though. I asked about waiting on a 4x4 and the dealer is basically saying I have to take it as it is allocated to my name? Not sure what I can do about it. 4x2 will be okay but would really prefer 4x4. Need to take delivery in this calendar year.

    What options do I have?

    Thx

If the dealer is telling you that you have to take it, they’re a scummy business and you should tell them that to their faces. What are they going to do? Sue you for not buying it? Unless you signed something weird and atypical, you’re under no obligation to buy it(even if you lose your deposit). Any honest dealer will let you pass on it, likely even keeping you at the top of the list for the next option that you prefer. That’s what mine did, my preference was for a a basic SR5 Crewmax TRD OR in Lunar Rock, but I’d be open to a higher trimmed truck so long as it was CM TRD OR Lunar Rock. I ended up in a hybrid Limited, but they did give me the option to keep waiting and I’d be at the top of the list for my preferred options. They also had other colors in SR5 trim that I could have taken as an alternative.

I will, however, say that it sounds like you did agree to a 2WD as a possible option. If you strongly preferred not to have a 2WD, you should specify 4x4 or nothing.

I know. Looks like I goofed. I did initial the form that had both options. I can always order a 4x4 and sell this one when it comes in if I absolutely have to have 4x4.

Truth is that nobody wants 2wd trucks, there are plenty available around my area just sitting on the dealer lots. Mostly only contractors are buying 2wd, but if your truck has a short bed then it's not even good for contractors.

Your dealer is trying to pressure you to buy it because there's low demand for those... And they'll have to sell it under msrp if it gets to their lot.

2wd will also be in less demand when you trade it in later.

4x4 they can sell it anytime, over msrp. So they don't want to sell it to you at msrp price.

This. I’d tell the dealer you’ll pass and wait on 4x4 and ask them if they really want to make a fuss over you passing on this one. It’s a much bigger deal to you than them. But you have a loud public voice

Yeah I'll probably go there tomorrow and talk to them. It's not like the Panthers are worth watching.

They are full of shit. It's not allocated to your name. That is a pressure tactic. It is allocated to their dealership. Your options are to buy it, or pass. Worst they can do is bump you to the bottom of the list, and if they do that, then you are better off taking your business elsewhere.

You shouldn't be dealing with one dealership, reach out to a bunch of dealers around your area and tell everyone what you're looking for and they will be calling you as soon as they'll get an allocation.

BUT - all of the salespeople will try to squeeze out 5-10k above msrp from you :) don't be afraid to negotiate. The sooner it comes to the truck delivery date, or if truck is on the lot, the more power you'll have to get them to agree to better deal. Although trucks are still in high demand and you'll still have to compete against others who can and do pay 5-10k above msrp. I had to pay 3k over

Why would you take something you don't really want? I'd tell em to shove the 2wd truck and find a different dealer and buy something you really want. You are in the drivers seat here so don't take any crap......

That is just insanity!!! Forcing you to purchase a truck you do not want!! Go to a different dealer and tell them to put it where the Sun don’t shine!

If you truly prefer or want 4x4, then talk to the dealer or another dealer. Unless they are a poor dealer, they will sell all the Tundras they get there hands on. If they truly want to keep you as a customer, they will make the switch and try to keep you coming back.

4x4 was low on my list, so I got the 4x2 that had everything I wanted versus the 4x4 sitting right next to it. I've owned 4x4's and 4x2's in the past, and just didn't use 4x4 that much, so it wasn't a big deal to me.

But, most importantly, if it is high on your list of wants, then make it happen!

Yeah, 4x2 honestly will be fine for virtually all of what I will do. It's just that when one wants/needs 4x4 is when I will wish I had it. I'm going to talk with the dealer this afternoon.

In fairness to them I did sign off on 4x2 as my second choice, so I have some responsibility in this.

i don’t believe maybe I’m wrong but you signed a piece of paper that stated what options (packages), color, trim you would consider. This is not the same as signing a contract. you are under no obligation to accept what they are offering. Remember they also have a piece a paper that says the truck comes with auto dimming mirrors but they are not offering it on the passenger side ? Get the truck that you want and will make you happy.

You don’t have a responsibility or obligation to buy it. You simply made a mistake on the the allocation form. They can’t make you buy it. What are they going to do, arrest you? Sue you? Even if they did have a signed contract (initials are not a signature), they’d have to show that they suffered financial loss when you didn’t buy it. Someone else will buy it if you don’t.

But the bottom line is that it could never come to that. The only responsibility you’ll have is from being bullied into a purchase you don’t want. Tell them to pound sand or they can kiss your butt. They literally cannot do anything to you.

Can’t believe that it has come to the point where people consider buying a $50k vehicle that they don’t really want for no reason!

Tell them you paid a deposit for a 4x4 of your liking. You do not have to sign papers on it. Tell them apply that deposit to next truck of your liking. I was told when I paid deposit if I didn't like what was being offered to me. I could use deposit for another vehicle. Say it with meaning don't leave them any options.

I went to the dealer this afternoon and they are more than willing to cancel my allocation on the 4x2 and put one in for a 4x4. The only problem is when will they be able to get one. A Platinum will be available before the end of the year but for a 1794 they are estimating well into 2023. For several reasons I need to make this purchase in this calendar year. I will probably go ahead and take delivery and then maybe order a 4x4 and just sell this one. If I can come out close to even that would be okay.
