I’m torn here, so I’m asking WWTD (what would tundras.com do?)?

I have a 2018 Tundra SR5 4x4 Crewmax with XSP appearance package. 77k miles on it. I’ve added a few small things like LED interiors, BajaDesigns amber fogs, rear sway, black chrome exhaust…. A/C fan is on the fritz and dealer can’t figure out why.

Local dealer has a ‘22 1794 with TRD Off-road package on the lot with 5k miles on it.

Dealer has offered 31,500 for mine as a trade (I owe 10).
I know there are a lot of mixed reviews on the ‘22s, so I’ll pose the question here: Stick with my ‘18 or trade in on the 1794?

Keep what you have and pay it off.
Nothing better than not having a vehicle payment.

The 2022s are PLAQUED with issues, threads popping up every day..
I'd wait until at least the 2024 year model to buy a Gen 3.

    Just my 2¢..

The HVAC fan really should not be a difficult thing to figure out. Should have at least 10 more good years with that truck if you ask me.

You’re pretty close to owning a great truck outright. I wouldn’t let a little fan issue that surely someone can figure out be cause to trade it in. I say get it fixed, pay it off and enjoy many relatively trouble free years and miles. Look at what a $500/month truck payment could be worth in 20 years if you invested it in mutual funds… even at 8% return your looking at 300k. Just saying, it’s stupid IMO to always be trading up and keeping a payment around and never own anything outright. That’s why be buy the most reliable trucks, to enjoy long term ownership. Tundras!

I bought a Tundra because I’m very cautious of new tech. I don’t think I’ll be buying anything built after my truck (Sept ‘20) for probably the next four or five years. Across the board. Your truck is awesome and extremely dependable. Get it detailed if you want that new truck vibe.

That said, I don’t think the 3rd gen is quite as unreliable as it might seem on the forum. But if you do have a problem with one, good luck getting it taken care of in anything resembling a timely fashion.

TRD Air Filters, Front door windows tinted to match the rears. Wheel locks, Talons Garage cat shield, Tyger Automotive soft tonneau cover, WeatherTech floor mats with Tuff Skinz Custom Emblem kit, Toyota OEM Emblem Black Out kit. AVS vent covers on all four doors, Red Tundra letters on front bumper & TRD highlighted in Red on front grille. Tailgate Tundra Letters in Black.
Get the 22 if the price is right for you. The dealership should be selling as certified pre-owned which gives you a 100,000 mile bumper to bumper warranty. The 22 is soooo much better. I sold my 2017 for 30 grand and bought a 2022.

^ This story is already bullshit...
You must be a Toyota used car salesman..:(

There is no 100,000 mile bumper to bumper warranty on any Toyota, more or less, a 'pre-owned' certified vehicle..

That 2022 might be in the dealer for a reason. You might find the reason later and will not be able to get your 2018 back.

Keep the 2018. Fix the ac. Take it to another dealer if necessary.

I have admittedly been a bit out of the loop and didn’t realize the level of dislike for the 22s. I did notice a few parts seemed flimsy, cheap. Like, the headliner felt loose.

I love my truck, not so much this past summer when the fan wouldn’t kick on, but I do love my truck. I don’t necessarily love the SR5 interior though. I’ve always said I wouldn’t trade unless it was a clear upgrade. Sounds like this one isn’t as clear as it may look on paper though.

    Thanks

$31,500 - $10,000 you owe = $21,500 towards the $70,000 sticker, plus tax and blah, blah, blah, which I have no idea what that comes out to, but we will say $1,500. 70,000 - 20,000 = a $50,000 loan, ummm NO !

Fix the fan and pay off the 18, WAY better !

Right now, I'd say stick with what you have, get it fixed, and pay it off. Give Toyota a few more years to work out the bugs then look at the Gen 3. Perhaps start making that "would-be" car payment to yourself now so you'll have a bigger down payment when you do trade in.

If you want to get out of yours, try to trade for a 21 Limited trim or higher. Still reliable l, but newer.

I did a lot of research on this starting about this time last year and also have a 2018 like you.
I actually started a thread on it too.
The main dangling carrot for me was I could make $6000 on my truck as a trade in after 4 years of owing it.
In the end for what I need in a truck, the cons of the new design, outweighed the pros.
    Still have my 2018.

I think that is very much a surface observation for a couple reasons, and you made the right choice. You may make 6k on your truck, but to buy a new one you also are probably paying 10-15% more for a comparable model as compared to when you bought yours so you’re just throwing that 6k out the window and then some. Money just buys significantly less now than it did even 2 years ago. Inflation is terrible. Inflation is growing so fast it’s difficult to even wrap one’s head around how much less your money buys you now vs in 2019. I think most of us aren’t even grasping it right now and think this is just a temporary phase of high prices that will pass. It’s not going anywhere though and it’s only getting worse. It’s a bad environment to be strapped with a ton of debt IMO.

    Just saying
A chipmunk made its way through the air filter and shredded the cabin filer in mine during the pandemic.
The particles got lodged into the fan blades.
I dropped the panel under the glove box, un plugged and pulled out the fan and cleaned out everything.

I love non-qualified statements like this. Yes it is new. The interior looks neat. It has more camera views and trailering assistance features. More low end torque. A few more mpg given the same mods as a 2nd Gen.

But it’s also longer, lower, worse visibility, worse turning, smaller inside, still has the bed bounce, still has low payload for the segment, more complicated by an order of magnitude, and should something go wrong—even a minor thing—it may take so long to get the part to fix it that you could qualify to have it lemon law’d.

I would encourage everyone—especially those who would carry a $50k note to get in—to sit this shitshow of a market out for the foreseeable future.

Stick with the '18. Don't look at the '22.

Advertising is designed to get you to part with your hard earned money and do things you wouldn't do otherwise!

I have a '15 with close to 115k miles on it. Paid off.

I intend to keep it forever.

It's not, and that's coming from a guy with a '22. Stick with the '18. The '22 is a great truck, but yours is still basically just getting broken in.
