Rear wheel camber when loaded

Hello

I'm relatively new to trucks. And this is a Sequoia, but I've seen this on pickup trucks too so I figured I'd ask here.

Unless I'm halucinating: it looks like the rear wheels have a negative camber, which is much more pronounced when towing near (but not over) the limit:



The Sequoia has got springs in the back.

There is no obvious uneven tire wear, and I pulled this trailer for nearly 20000km this year. I'll measure with a tool when I put the winter tires on.

Is this normal? Other than getting a lighter trailer (which isn't going to happen): is there anything I can or should do about it?

It’s normal. Virtually all independent rear suspensions do this due to the uneven length control arms. I can’t speak for uneven wear on tires as I haven’t towed much with my sequoia. Pulling a travel trailer near capacity with a WD was no problem, though. It squatted a little less than 2” while keeping the front end from lifting up. I plan on adding air bags to it just to eliminate any sag and get rid of the negative camber. But negative camber is better for handling and stability than positive camber.

The Firestone air bag kit for the sequoia is 4164 and can be had for just over $100. I picked up some from Summit; they are sitting on a shelf in the garage waiting to be installed. Note that they are 1000 lb capacity bags, not 5000 lb capacity bags like the tundra option. The sequoia ones slip inside the coil. From what I’ve seen, it is best to inflate them before hitching up the trailer or loading down the cargo area. Guess I’ll find out.

 

Cool. I'd love to hear about your experience installing and using the air bags. Looks like a non-trivial project.
