    Hey all,
    2000 tundra 4.7 145,000

So im driving across the country right now, and had an ignition coil go out on me on the highway today. Pulled over and pulled codes for running lean and a cylinder 2 misfire. Front passenger side coil went out. Putzed 6 miles in to town for a new one.

Back on the road with a new coil and no CE or codes, but theres a real loud tick now that sounds like an exhaust leak. My fuel mileage and power have dropped significantly as well.

Did I screw something up driving with the misfire? I had a small exhaust leak prior. Did the misfiring somehow make it worse. It sounds horrendus, but im on a tight time schedule.

    Thanks!

Unburnt fuel can destroy a catalytic converter. 6 miles of putzing May or May not be enough to send an old 2000 model cat over the edge. Increase back pressure from clogged up cat could make an already leaking or ticking exhaust manifold louder. Theory, not fact.

    Thanks KNABORES

I forogt to mention that I replaced the original manifolds about 3000 miles ago with new headers. Forgot the brand, but they were $460ish together. The leak I mentioned as somewhere downstream from them (90% sure)

What brand of coil did you buy, and where'd you get it from?

People have even had problems with high-quality brands like MSD in our trucks.

I had to use whatever the Napa could get as I was stranded. The box says ULTRA 8 is the brand. I haven't heard of them before.

Got it. And I understand 100%.

Does the ticking stop if you unplug power to the new coil while engine is running?

If not, it's not the new coil. I've heard manifolds and/or injectors making ticking noises, could be one of those.

I have a ticking sound on my '06 I've never been able to figure out, and there are several others who've said they have similar. I forget whether it appears when warm, or goes away when warm. I feel like it starts once warmed up. Doesn't quite sound like lifter rattle to me, it's more like the tick you'd hear from something arc'ing.

Is the ticking just inside the cab or can you hear it externally (windows rolled down)? If it’s just internal, there’s a fix for that.

Coil should not cause ticking. 2000s are known for developing cracks in the exhaust manifold. Mine started ticking when cold about years ago about 90K. Usually stops after a few minutes. Only by Denso coils. You can get them for about 54 bucks at the Rock. I have a nearly new off-brand coil Bought in a pinch once that started misfiring and throwing codes after 90 days. Do yourself a favor and get a new Denso for that coil and put the other in your glovebox for spare or better yet get two Densos.
