Truck shutting off while driving

I was driving through an old pond bed that wasn’t crazy bumpy but I was in 4HI with my tires turned a little less than full lock and when I went over this bump my truck shut off. I turned it back on and everything seems to be fine. This is the first time I’ve had a 4.7 do this to me. I’ve owned this 2005 Tundra DC 4wd V8 for about 8 months now and have done many of off road miles (lots were worse than the conditions were when the truck shut off) and haven’t had this problem yet. I’m wondering if it’s bad grounding or wiring somewhere? I’ve noticed that the truck does run kind of rough at idle but nothing crazy for a 160k mile truck probably just me looking into it to much lol. Please let me if someone else has had this problem

 

Start with the small things. Check to make sure your battery cables are tight. Did this pond have water in it or dry?

 

Spark plugs? Ever been changed?

 

Instant shutoff without any special noises and stuff, I'm thinking it's power related and would focus on the power cables.

Not knowing if you were seeing any dash lights after it shutoff makes it difficult to say. Really need to know the current state/symptoms, what are they?

I'm really hoping the pond was dry or mostly dry at the time, and this isn't a hydrolock situation, but I couldn't tell from your post.

 

Just a point about this also.

If it gets power, are there any codes set? Does it crank?

(I'm thinking about the few things that would cause the fuel pump to fail... which would kill the engine almost instantly, but all power would remain on, and it would be able to crank, but wouldn't be able to fire)

 

Sounds exactly like a battery cable situation to me.

 

The pond was completely dry and there wasn’t any codes thrown. I just did a 35 miles camping trip through mountain roads and didn’t have a single problem with it. I know there is some rust underneath the truck so I’ll check grounds and my cables to the battery

 

Grounds are a great hypothesis, great first look. How heavy are your keys? Maybe the jiggling about is affecting the ignition due to a key ring full of keys on a worn ignition cylinder. These trucks are equipped with a "crash" fuel shutoff (ask me how I know) that will cut the fuel pump with a rapid decel / sudden jarring stop scenario. Maybe the rough terrain triggered it? Also, My 2000 with 265k plus miles has a nice smooth idle, so there may be something else amiss if your idle is rough. Cracked plug boot? Or those previously mentioned ground cables.

 

How does one reset this fuel shutoff? Or does it reset after an ignition cycle?

 

Turn the ignition off and back on.
