Anyone jack the side of the truck up a bit to drain any extra oil? Id read somewhere some do that but was curious if that was good to do or necessary?

The whole point of owning a truck is, no jack needed for oil change

    I don’t but I get the logic.

I do measure how much oil is drained each time It has consistently been 8 qts from the reservoir and probably 1/2 qt or less from the filter housing. This is with no jacks and on a somewhat level surface.

Since the drain plug is on the right side of the pan, lifting the left side of the truck some after the pan is done draining does result in some more oil to drain out. I have done this, although not sure if it makes much differance overall.

Save yourself the trouble and drive the side opposite the drain plug up on a piece of 5/4 decking boards. It doesn't matter if it's 1 degree difference or 10. Except the time to fully drain.

My Element required driving the front wheels up on ramps for a full drain which was .3 qts more than the standard 5 qt Castol jug. Did all that effort really make a difference especially when every 30K I did a trans fill and drain and only replaced 30% of the fluid?

Just drain the oil while the truck is still warm for better oil flow. That's what I do :crapstorm:and lay down alot of newspaper.

I use the truck's frame rail for my bench press to drain the extra oil.

what's that extra oz of oil going to do, when you are pouring 8 qts of oil back to diluted...

Sometimes I pour a half quart of new oil in while the draining is in progress. Sorta chasing out the old with the new lol.

I do this with my trans too, if I know I'm going to have the extra fluid/oil to use.

Oil will be trapped all over the engine, washing it down or waiting 5 hrs for the last drop does nothing and the old stuff harms nothing. You're better off dropping the pan and giving it a good cleaning, might even reveal the overall engine health... but then thats a lot of messy work and might even require a new gasket...
