FDNY EMT Lt. Alison Russo-Elling was on duty and walking near her station house by 20th Avenue and 41st Street around 2:20 p.m. on Thursday. A gruesome video shows a man lunging at Russo-Elling with a knife. She is slammed to the ground, bashing her head on the sidewalk. The madman stabbed her 19 times in Astoria, Queens.

The 61-year-old EMT suffered fatal stab wounds to the chest. Russo-Elling was rushed to Mount Sinai Queens Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

Russo-Elling was killed on the job just six months before she was set to retire. She reportedly planned to spend more time with her daughter and grandchildren after retirement.

Tributes poured in for Russo-Elling – who was a first responder at the World Trade Center on Sept. 11, 2001, and assisted in the rescue and recovery efforts at Ground Zero after 9/11.

Incredibly sad. NYC has reached a new low. Endless news reports of people (especially females) being violently attacked for no apparent reason.

    RIP

Sad to see - such a senseless act.

I hate to say it - but it serves as a reminder. She planned on spending more time with family. You never know what tomorrow holds - as tough as it can be, sometimes you have to prioritize you and yours over others. It’s sad when someone like this doesn’t and put the public’s well being ahead of family - planning on spending time with them “at retirement” - too often retirement comes with a casket. Her family is owed a tremendous debt of gratitude by the people of NYC. Hopefully that is understood and repaid with proper recognition.

Sure hate to see stuff like this. Thoughts and prayers to the family. If we don’t start treating criminals like criminals I fear we won’t be able to find Police, Fire, EMT, Teachers, etc.
