1,000,001th redundant tire question

    E5CC9877-8818-4DC2-9CDE-818828DE8A40.jpg Hey. I’ve already dealt with the slight mpg hit of going from original LTX’s to Ridge Grapplers (E rated) same size.
    RG’s were ok overall and limped in to get over 50k miles.

    I’m wondering (staying in E-rated) but going to 275/70/18’s if I’ll see another 3/4 mpg hit?

    RG’s were 56+lbs so I’m fairly certain weight would be same or less on new tires once I decide on a new tire.

    (Fit is no concern with 6112’s /5160’s at stock height. Lol yes stock 3/4” lift up front. )

    I have Falken Wildpeak AT3 in 295/70r18 on my truck. They weigh almost 70 lbs each. Lost about 1mpg.

    That size is really close to stock. As you said, it’s the weight that causes rolling resistance and hurts mpg. I think you’d see about the same mpg. It also depends on how you drive it.

    My tires are just under 35”, don’t know the weight, and I usually get 11/12 mpg but if I fill up and drive 55 or 65 mph for a long distance I get 15/16.

    Im pretty chill driving. Steady 10-15mph over speed limit but I build up the speed gradually so it’s ok.

    I am thinking aside from aesthetics and slight mpg hit the bump from 275/65 to 275/70 there are no other benefits. ‍

    Maybe higher max tire load ?

    It’ll just fill out your wheel well better. I wouldn’t think you’d ever be close to max ratings for the tire. I’d go with the cheaper one if all else is equal. That could make up for the loss of mpgs.

    I run Wildpeaks 275/70-18, E load and you dip about 1mpg from EPA estimates vs stock SL 32inch tires.

    City 12/13, highway 16 to 17 with avg 14, so a bit lower. Stock I was seeing 13 city, 17-18highway. Now I can get EPA estimate if I am mindful about driving and keep speeds 70 and under. I am also lifted 2 inch front and 1 rear.

    so yes, from stock expect about 1-1.5 mpg lower than when the truck has stock wheels and all.

    Do hand calculation for MPG, Tundra computer is not super accurate stock and when you put larger tires on, the computer MPG is no longer correct, thinks you are running 32inch tires.

    Love them. Great in wet, snow, not loud considering the aggressive tread, drive and handle well on road and great traction off road. Easily one of the best AT tires I have ever run on any vehicle. I liked them so much on the Tundra I installed a set on my 4runner. It is a tire that not only looks amazing, but performs as good as it looks.

    They were are on short list. KO2’s, Wildpeaks and LTX M/S.

    KO2s are not as good as they once were. Had them on the 4runner and replaced them with wildpeaks. Likely will not run them again, too many other good AT tires out there- Falken, Toyo, Nitto, Cooper have better alternatives. BFG does shine in the desert/rock/sand areas. They do not do especially well on the road in wet conditions or mud. They harden as they age and can be a pain to balance.

    Michelin Defender LTX is a GREAT tire, if you can handle the mild look. Excellent on road, wet, snow and actually do surprisingly well off road in dirt, sand, but not meant for mud/rocks. They will be the best riding truck tire and last super long.

    I agree on Michelin’s along with millions of other people. My off road adventures are tame at best.
    I liked original Michelin’s that came on truck new except: P-rated, squishy, 25k miles and toasted. The E-version should fix those issues and both the 275/65 and 275/70 weigh 5+lbs less than these RG’s presently.

    Lol here. My tire issue is which size of the best overall tire do I want? Life is good

    Same sentiment regarding the tires, absolutely love them! Currently have them on both of our Toyotas!

    Im about the same, I just wonder how off the calculations from the computer are. Does anyone know if there is some sort of software correction for going with bigger tires?? I may ask the dealer at my 5K service.

    Hypertech makes a speedometer calibrator, but when I put in 2022 on their website there isn’t any option for Toyota. Might have to wait a little longer until someone cracks the ecu. I’m not sure if this fixes just the mph or also fixes the mpg.
