I have a blue 2008 Tundra SR5 with the 5.7L and off-road package, currently at 187K miles. The other day as I was leaving work, my check engine light came on along with 4lo blinking, VSC off, and slip indicator light. It went into limp mode and I couldn’t go over 35 mph (it felt like it was in neutral). So I pulled over and left the truck running a little and went outside of it and smelled fuel outside of the truck. I shut it off for a couple of minutes and turned it back on, lights still on. I didn’t want to waste time on getting it towed so I limped with my hazard lights on. The dealerships and car shops were closed since it was after 7:30 pm when I was out. I limped to Advance Auto and they used a code reader and picked up code P2442 which is Secondary Air Injection System valve stuck open on bank 2. I panicked as I knew that this is a common problem on Tundras and it meant that I have to replace the whole assembly and it’s costly since the exhaust manifold has to come off! I take care of my truck like it’s my baby, all services done and this caught me off guard. I bought the truck used back in 2013 and it was a one owner, very detailed service history. It appears that the SAI pump probably has never been replaced. At this point it’s obviously out of warranty. I heard of the bypass kit that can be purchased. When I’ve done cold starts I always heard this ringing sound on the passenger side for a few seconds then hear something like pressure releasing and figured this was the pumps going off to warm the cats faster. I went to the mechanic the next day and all he did was turn those lights off with the code reader. He said if those same lights come back on again, then it’s definitely something wrong with the SAI pump. I just know that it’s going to return. Right now it hasn’t came back on yet, but when it does I’ll go to the dealership and see what they say and get quotes. Fingers crossed

Thanks, I will definitely give Hewitt a call. However, I have one question, even if I did decided to replace the AIP and the valves, would the issue ever occur again?

    Likely yes.

They changed the programming to run the pumps at engine shut off to try and blow out the condensation. Issue still sporadically occurs.

Is it that high pitch ringing sound that you hear on cold starts or when it sits too long?

When the engine turns off you'll hear the pumps do their "clean".

@Thomas4x4 I know we are a little late to this party but hope you decided give us a call and install the Bypass Kit. Would love to hear how it went. I also wanted to provide some additional thread resources for anyone one looking for more information about this inevitable issue.
