So I already own 1 AR. It was my first and its fine but want something from a manuf. Mine is a built AR, nothing fancy. DPMS lower+upper, Wylde barrel, Magpul accessories and a Vortex Venom Red Dot. I was looking at spending less than 2k OTD. I have looked at the Saint Victor and Edge. I was currently looking at the FN Tac3. I have also looked at soooo many others that its mind draining. It will be just for fun. Typical range days, that's all. Considering I hardly make it the range, I was also thinking of something cheaper. I have a .22 conversion that I am going to install on my current AR and start showing my son & daughter to shoot. So I want another one just for me.

Not necessarily in that order. Also buy a couple extra parts kits in case they ever pass a ban.

$2k will get you a lot of gun and red dot

you can easily get into a basic Daniel Defense, FN, Colt, Sons of Liberty, and many others

You can’t go wrong with a BCM or LWRC. Picked up a LWRC di and it has been quality

Palmetto State Armory for an inexpensive range toy. Or S&w M&P tactical. I generally spend under 1k on my range toys because I could not fully exploit the capabilities 2k-plus rifle, but would spend more if I get to a point where I could make the most of it. Use the difference and buy parts and ammo. In this environment I am focused on accumulating parts and large cap magazines for my most frequently shot platforms. I have a few ARs. Then I picked up cheap spare complete lowers. Then I started buying cheap lower parts kits and bolts and bolt rebuild kids and such. Once you get number 2 start planning on having everything you need to feed and maintain it through a shortage. My stash is set up with enough spare parts redundancy so every gun can always keep running through parts breakage and so if any gun goes down I know somewhere in there I have the part to fix it myself or give to a gunsmith to install without ordering anything.

I have looked at a couple of those and it’s over $2k. And to top it off most, if not a lot of the gun shops here don’t carry them.

I was also thinking of going with. $1 and under AR spending the rest on parts and bullets. I don’t really go shooting a lot or do any type of shooting that would require a high end AR.

From QC to potential failures to shootability of the gun

there is a huge difference between most $600 guns and most $1500 guns

all of my guns except a couple handguns are range toys but I still want to reduce failures and have a good quality rifle that doesn’t cause me to spend more money over the life of the gun or every other range trip because either something failed or there’s a better replacement part

I’m not saying go drop $$$$ stupid money on a boutique rifle, but get something that doesn’t need immediate change in parts…you’ll nickel and dime yourself out of way more money over the years that way

Generally if you get a bcg with good staking on the gas key, staked castle nut and a bolt with the right specs you are going to be good with an occasional range plinker even if it isn’t a 1500 dollar gun. Every failure with a low cost low round count AR I have experienced related to a castle nut backing out or a gas key coming loose. Close 3rd is cycling issues because of the crap extractor springs Used in most cheap bolts. 4th is gas tube coming lose so look for a barrel dimpled for the gas block or maybe pinned. Also easy to dimple yourself later.

Even the cheapest PSA lowers I have bought come with a staked castle nut. Now I just buy them, slap a decent upper with a good bolt on it, upgrade the extractor spring if need be and end up with a moderate round count range beater AR that will run like a top for 6-700 bucks.

BCM and FN are GTG for the money , I’ve put thousands of rounds “some 855a1” though a BCM upper with very little maintenance and it’s never malfunctioned. As far as the tier 1 stuff, KAC, LMT and Noveske they are nice but expensive. I’ve owned a KAC and still have a few LMT’s and a few Noveske’s. LMT’s are my favorite due to the barrel design and lower. KAC has a better bolt, LMT has a better upper/barrel and lower design IMO. Noveske is an amazing barrel manufacturer that assembles a good rifle, not a lot of innovation with the Noveske’s.

Some People aren’t going to like what I am about to say but In my years of experience using M16a1 to multiple brand M4’s, from gas to piston, etc etc. so many things to compare on them, but bottom line is they all go BANG! Yes you can spend $500 or $3k on them, but it all comes down to your choice and use for it (SHTF, zombies (that’s right they coming eventually), competition, home defense (some do), etc etc). Pick it up, handle it, do your research/reviews on it. I have $500 (Diamondback/Core/etc) AR’s that shot almost as well as my more expensive ones $2k plus (LWRC/H&K/SCAR/etc). Buy what you like and can afford it will do it’s job when the time comes. Have owned and still own many and have yet to have any just not go BANG or do it’s job. This is from my personal experience only. If you only prefer certain ones that is your choice. I always say, to each his own……ok one pic of some of them….:D

Just 14k loose rounds. No boxes or wrapping etc. Funny thing is I saw these at all places at an local Academy like 8 or so years ago for like $4k and was like no way. If i only knew, would of bought 3-4 of them. You CANNOT find these right now and they go for $14k no BS Google “Winchester 5.56 M193 drum”. I had two but traded one for something. You can’t even move it with 3-4 grown men. We had to use a forklift!! When the truck delivered them (was a special delivery) it came with a forklift attached to the back of the delivery truck. I have a friend who owns a gun store and he has been looking for me for the last two years and got the call a few months ago he found 2 and if I wanted them. He had to take all kinds of extra crap from the vendor to get em but that’s what friends do for other friends!!
(I’m a good friend too as I bought a lot of the extra stuff too!!)

You can find them cheaper, but for some reason these drums demand full price. Guess they think if you’re buying 14k rounds you can afford full/high end pricing. :censored:

Yeah, I can't justify that kind of money for 5.56. I'll help keep the cost down for you by not increasing the demand.

I have been wanting one of these drums for a while now so when my gun guy found a couple I couldn’t pass, plus most of his vendors been telling him they thought the drums were gone and won’t be made anymore. I do have plenty of much cheaper .223 & 5.56 rounds bought on the low low between $0.45 to $0.55 and not gonna show all. This probably too much showing as is:

Yeah 556 can be weird, especially post COVId. I find that big bulk discounts aren’t that impressive over 20,30 or 50 round boxes. I can find individual boxes for 50-60 cents per round, haven’t really seen a lot of case-plus deals for much cheaper than that in awhile.
