After trying to log in since i thought i was already a member , But I am now so Here we go . I have a 2011 Tundra Limited and the check engine icon on the dash or Speedometer gauge just light up about 3 days ago and after checking with some local shops about engine analyzers and how much they dont do as in pinpointing what may be the issue i thought i might see if anyone on here with a similar vintage truck had the same thing happen or something more concrete that may point me in the right direction on what i can check before i go throw money at a shop so they can tell me whats wrong. The truck has about 70 k on the dial and i have not had any issues until now with check engine lights or anything else except a brake job and the shop trying to sell me a battery since they say a cell is going bad , but i figured when it stops working i will replace it . But the check engine light does not flash or blink it just is lighted up and does not go off. But i can tell if anything is wrong no noise no smoke no bumps in the night it runs like it always has but the light is on and i would like to know why or at least what i can do to check for any issues. Thanks to all .

You would need to know the codes you are getting that are causing your Check Engine Light to illuminate before ever attempting to troubleshoot the cause of it.

Go to your local auto parts store and ask them to read the codes through the OBD port. Most commercial chains will do this for free. That will give you the information you need to start pinpointing your problem.

    Hi Mike
thanks for the response, Prior to getting on this site i did speak with the auto parts guys and went over just that with them, He said the units they use give you a general overview of what or were the issue might be and read the general code that there units flags on the system. He said it still does not zero in on the actual faults and in order to get that you or i have to go to a shop /dealer, or someone who has the analyzer that will tell you exactly what the issue or issues are. He said all of the over the counter scanners you can buy just don't have the capabilities that the dealers have and that is my next stop. I was looking for someone who may have a similar truck who may have had something i could compare to or at least get an idea. They want to have them stay in business too so they don't just let everyone have what they pay big bucks for so they got us by the short hairs.
    Thanks for Your Response.
PS I know it sucks just a frigging idiot light could be gas cap to blown head gaskets but maybe some electrical devices also. So Off to Toyota i go.

It has nothing to do with wanting someone to stay in business or not, its just the fact that a $199 scan tool from AutoZone isnt going to tell you the same thing that a certified technician with equipment that costs well into the thousands of dollars can tell you. Like you mentioned, an engine light can be a simple gas cap wasnt tightened down enough after getting gas or could be youre going to need an engine replacement. Someone on this forum thats had an engine light come on in their truck is going to have zero knowledge of what is going on in yours. Im sure that comes off as very blunt but its just the facts and you need to have your truck checked to see if its something small that isnt that much of an issue or if it is something that is causing more damage the more you drive it around.

    Hi Mike
I hear you about the cost and all, I know what you mean about the Big Picture with the Equipment that people have and need to stay in Business and all of the things that make it all tick when it comes to systems and diagnosing any and all issues that it could or couldn't be . On the bright side this just gives me an excuse to get some recall work done on the main window controls replacement and maybe some window motors or what ever they have to do to solve the recall notice. But I didn't mean to make it sound crass about what the issues are in regards to my original post i was just looking for anything someone might have had happen to there Toyota that might be similar to mine or at least and idea if I could have a Crystal ball that shows all the issues even if there small that might trigger a code or at least a way to eliminate a few of the issues before i have to take it to the dealer. I did not expect an exact replica of what my truck is doing just some of the issues other people were having that might give me an idea. I was going to take it in since i don't have much choice and at least they can solve the mystery and fix some other things that they do . I shall give some feedback when i get the truck gone thru so maybe other folks can use the info for there own uses if it helps them in there repairs or diagnosis's. Thanks Mike " Ill Be Back ":bikewheelie2:

Hoping its nothing major for you and in all honesty it probably isnt. Its got some years on it being a 2011 but the miles are very low plus its a Toyota so youre probably going to be fine. Ive got a 2008 with 116K miles and its just a tank. Id just hate for you to hold out and it be an issue that causes more problems down the road by going unchecked. Get those recalls done for sure, are they recent ones because recalls do expire so keep that in mind on any in the future.
