Picked the truck up yesterday. Dropped it off for some window tint today. Did all 4 windows, windshield and sunroof. The shop drove the car to the street and when I went to pick it up 20 min later, it wouldn’t start.

All the electronics turn on, but the motor won’t turn over. All of the warning lights on the dash are on “hybrid system malfunction”, “check engine visit your dealer”, “secondary collision brake system malfunction” and the gas tank cover started to pop open.

Heard the windshield tint might be the cause, but I also know people with 22 models who have tinted their windshield without issue.

Have to wait until the dealers service department is open on Monday….

Could they have drained the battery? Do you have a meter to check the voltage?

The tint could be the cause? How does that work?

Maybe the installer got a little wild with the spray bottle and fried something?

That's a stretch but the only thing I can think of.

Thought maybe the battery was dead so they tried jumping it.

A tech at Toyota said he’s seen tinting the windshield can cause issues with all the sensors new cars have. I have no idea. But I read on some forums that when people tint the windshield, excess water can drip down into the dash and cause problems. And things go back to normal once it’s all dried. Hopefully that’s it.

Did they tint the windshield for you?
We use a soak rope wedged down in the firewall to hopefully soak up any water tryin to run down there …& also cover the entire dash with microfiber towel to protect it
A lot of these new vehicles make me nervous but get asked constantly to tint them
    Hopefully you get it resolved

    Edit
Just re-read that they did do the windshield
Hopefully they used some of those precautions

    Thanks man.

Shop just told me they tried starting the truck and it’s completely dead now. Had to use the key to manually open the door.

So maybe it’s a battery issue. They just told me they tried jumping it with one of those little portable jumpers yesterday. Gonna connect it to some actual cables today and see what happens. Fingers crossed!!!

I have a Fiat 124 that's similar to the new Miata. Both Fiat and Mazda owners have electronic problems after window tinting. Something inside the door gets wet when the tint shop does the side windows. Knowing this my first guess is it's due to the tinting.

Jump starting it worked!!! The truck started but all of the system malfunction warnings are still going off.

Hopefully as it dries out they go off. If not then I’ll remove the windshield tint and/or take it to the dealer tomorrow.

I would wait for it to dry and then take it to the dealer. The physical tint itself should have no impact on this, although I guess the moisture theory is plausible. I tinted my truck all around a few weeks after I purchased it and have had no issues since then.

Well drove the truck around for 40 min to charge it. Parked it for lunch and then it wouldn’t start again. Even with a jump. Had to tow it to the dealership so we’ll see what they say…..

Mine wouldn’t start as well at one point. 1974. Called the 1800 number. It’s possible the key isn’t paired with the truck. I tried my app and nothing as well. If you check the manual there’s a process to reset it. Something like hold it by the start button for 20 seconds…. worked for me. The person on the phone walked me through it. I’d try this before paying for a tow.
I originally thought my key battery was dead but it wasn’t. good luck.

Yes. I know for a fact that on certain Mercedes cars you have to go as far as disconnecting a module in the trunk. When doing the back window water always falls on this module and fries it. Cost around $2k to replace I believe, expensive tint job if the installer doesn't know. Maybe its something different on the OPs truck but could be possible.

Late night update- Pulled the windshield tint off before the dealer got it in the morning, and everything works now. Reset the battery and all of the system malfunction lights are gone. Started the truck 20 times to be sure and it fired up every time.

For anyone wondering it was the almost clear (70% I think) ceramic tint. My friend with a limited off road tinted his windshield without issue. I’m not sure if the windshield on the Pro has different sensors or something but I’m glad it’s resolved.

    Thanks for the input everyone!

So it was just the tint that caused this, and not the water, or was it a combination? Thanks for the update.

Wow - that is weird. I had a full tint including windshield with same 70% tint a little over a week ago. No issues on mine. It’s a platinum.

See, I still feel like something is odd here. My Pro is tinted on all four side windows, the rear, the windshield, and the moonroof. No issues with my tint, so this is mystifying.

I would still ensure the dealership give it a once over…maybe at least pull the codes that went off and see if you get a clue as to what the issue was.

Seems ridiculous that the tint did it… truck start at night…

The hybrid ECU sits somewhere behind the dash around the glovebox area. It’s possible water got there and shorted something temporarily, causing the hybrid fault and no start.

Did the dealer find any codes?

I had ceramic tint put on my TRD Pro late last week. Immediately after I picked it up from the tint shop, my fuel door kept popping open on its own. I ended up having to pull the fuse for it. About 24 hours later I put the fuse back in and no issues since. Definitely think there is something to the theory about water getting places it shouldn't be and causing some (hopefully temporary) issues.

My best guess is that it was the tint. The water seems more likely, but it’s so strange that it started as soon as the tint was removed. The likelihood that it dried up just enough as the tint was removed is slim, but I don’t know.

The temperature on the dash also was not working when the tint was on.

I will DEFINITELY still take it to the dealer to see what they say. And I’ll let you guys know the results so nobody else has to deal with the same headache.

The fuel door also happened to me. Replaced the fuse and is solved the problem.

Yes, it is on the inside. And the tint percentage is usually like 70-80% for a windshield, and really doesn't look tinted at all. The reasoning is for the ceramic films heat rejection.

Hopefully its something simple but I wonder if some lights got switched on by accident as they were inside installing tint and that didn't drain the battery. Would be easy to do. Just not sure if you had it there overnight or just a few hours.
