Pedal Commander PC27 causing P2121 code.....

So long story short, I have had a pedal commander on my previous 4runner and my 2019 tundra. My wife purchased the PC27 unit almost two years ago from a forum member for my birthday - and it has worked fine since then.

we are moving and needed to free up some funds and the mod was unnecessary so I decided to sell some things. Offered it here for sale and it sold quickly. I pulled out of the driveway after selling it and my truck went into limp mode. Pulled over and scanned the truck and had the P2121 code. Cleared the code, unhooked the battery terminal and continued on my way. This happened three times and wouldn't resolve. Further investigation led me to disconnect the pedal commander and delete the profile which fixed the issue. I immediately contacted the buyer and refunded the money as I was worried it was a defective unit (and after researching more it is a KNOWN issue and something that they would fix and warranty if I was the original purchaser).

Well, this was installed on my truck since Nov. 2020 with no issues (they did do an update for the throttle surge) until this week. I contacted their customer service department and explained the issue. They confirmed it was an issue with the units, and they would have a reflash or send out a replacement unit IF it was under warranty. I explained to them that I received it a as gift and found that it was purchased second hand.......I asked them why it matters where I purchased it from as it was a known issue and had been used on my truck for almost two years (it isn't like this is something that can be abused and mismanaged to cause the issue due to second hand market purchase in this case).

Anyway, after going back and forth, they said that I am out of luck and the best they'll do is offer me a discount on a brand new unit. No thank you - I will be taking my Tundra talents to Banks Pedal Monster when some funds free up. I was not aware that the pedal commander could cause this type of issue to a truck, that their customer service wouldn't stand by a product with a known issue. I have no issue with them not warrantying their product if there was something I did to screw it up, but that isn't the case here. Hiding behind a BS policy for a known flaw in the product is bad business. I will choose not to purchase their products in the future. Hoping all of you that have the pedal commander either don't have the same issue or bought it from an authorized vendor.

I am just glad this happened to my truck and was reversible before I disconnected and sent it to the forum member who purchased it. @bulldog93, thanks for your understanding and I am sorry that this happened.

 

So you had it and it worked fine, sold it, got it back, reinstalled it, and then had an issue with it?

 

He sold it but had not shipped it yet.

Gotcha...you just happen to get the code before you pulled it but it was fine for 2 years. Was it the Bluetooth version? Now I'm wondering what "batch" they are saying has issues.

 

Yes it was the Bluetooth version. And it only had the surging issues when I first installed it in nov 2020 but they did an over the air update and it fixed it. Not one issue since then.

 

Gotcha. I'm wondering why it gave you the code now. I hace 2 of them. I ran a non-bluetooth in my truck for a couple of years. I bought a BT version from someone on here and put it in the truck and moved the non-BT over to the wife's 4Runner. I haven't had any issues with either one.

 

I have had the BT version for a good minute and no issues either.

 

What does the pedal commander do?

 

Eliminates the throttle delay.

 

I feel like I have very little as it is, and when I put it into tow/haul even less lag.

 

Tow/Haul and the PC operate completely different.

 

Not sure which setup you're running but my heavy ass oversized KO2s cause some throttle lag compared to stock so between speedo calibration and something like a pedal commander (I am going Banks) one could return to normal or enhanced, more spirited driving characteristics. The V8 is significantly tuned by the software; these devices let you adjust to your liking. Not everyone wants one or cares. For me it's something I want but it's more tertiary - regearing comes first.
