4Hi vs. AWD

During the 3G rollout a reviewer asked a Yota engineer why no 4A? Answer was our customers don't want it or need it. No mention that the hybrid is too torquey, which I thought might be the reason. They need to stock a different trans for the hybrid, so maybe they would have to source a beefier tcase also? But the LC300 diesel produces 516tq and has fulltime 4WD with CDL, same as older LC's.

Yep, literally millions of miles in the Sequoias with the full multimode tcase - 2WD, fulltime 4HI with CDL, fulltime 4LO with CDL. Many people don't understand that the CDL button can be engaged/disengaged at any speed to provide a locked 50/50 torque split, AKA "traditional" 4HI and 4LO.

Seemed a no-brainer to me Yota would finally get it into the 3G Tundra and keep it in the 3G Sequoia, but here we are and neither has it.

 

I like the AWD in my V8 4runner, never worried about taking it up to Tahoe during winter. There are rare times I wish I had the 2wd option but far more useful to have the AWD.

 

yeah i know. i think after i got all 3 diffs serviced it started binding more at the higner end of 40-60mph going thru that same bend.

now it happens at a lower speed.

 

Ford runs a 4Auto case on their Hybrid. Its even made my Borg Warner who makes the case in the 3rd Gen tundra. They make virtually the same torque

 

I’m not even sure how much hardware difference there is between the transfer case for the Tundra and the transfer case for the F150. About the only thing we do know is the Tundra transfer case uses a chain the size of a 3/4 ton, but last I checked 4auto is available on HD trucks too.

 

I know I can engage 4WD up to 62mph for snowy roads, off road conditions, etc. However, the owners manual doesn’t say anything about duration or max speed while under the 4WD mode. The advantage of 4auto in previous vehicles for me has been the convenience of just driving and not worrying about it. But with the Tundra and upstate winters, I will need 4WD often. Therefore, how do I utilize the 4WD without tearing it up or using it too often?

 

mike sweers told me exactly that , too much torque and no supplier had systems that Toyota felt would hold up to their standards and the torque they are pushing through this new motor. I’d trade 4hi for 4auto in a heartbeat. Way better trade off for me. Not looking forward to flipping between 2wd and 4wd 10 times a day during a typical Canadian winter day. Black Ice to snow to turning on dry pavement and back again. Spoke to a 10 year Toyota dealer tech today he said Toyotas getting “stuck/frozen” when flipping from 2wd to 4wd in the dealer lot was a daily occurrence. . Maybe just time to move to a different climate..

I don’t know if it’s correct or a typo in the material but the new 3rd Gen Tundra had Toyota WS ATF listed as the lubricant oil for the transfer case. Seems odd, but just what I read.

If true the pour point will be way way lower than

$39 75W-90 GL-5 Limited Slip, Ultra Long Drain 500k Miles, Manual Transmission, Gear/Differential Lubricant (1 Gallon)

75W-90 gear oil. So the new transfer case should shift better between modes of true.

 

All the ford cases are Mercon LV or ULV. 4auto or not.
