I am puzzled by this scam E-mail. First, it's pretty funny. Next, what is the angle? If it's phishing, there's no link to click and they aren't asking to respond to the E-mail (or maybe they are?) Also, how do they know I even own a Tundra?

Maybe they just want a review?

Put down your gun? Lol. Also there are format problems like the spacing between sentences. Toyota would not be that sloppy.

Somewhat unrelated but I found a new "scam" (my term for it) on Google. I was looking at businesses and one of them had over 100 five-star reviews so I was figuring it was good. Well, lo and behold, if you actually look at the reviews instead of just the summary, there are a ton of one-star reviews that don't get included in the average for some reason. Then, when you start to read those, most of them say something along the lines of "the company told me to give them a good review so I did initially but now that I got my discount, they're actually terrible."

I've noticed that sometimes reviews are tied to promotions where the reviewer got the product for free in exchange for a review and those are always positive.

We just recently returned from a 2 week trip to CO and stayed at two places that were ranked 5/5, one an ABNB and the other a Boutique Motel, and we would not stay at them again. Hard to understand how they get such great reviews.

I wanted to leave a bad review for a local trailer repair shop that strung me along, lied to my insurance company and just generally made it clear that they didn't want my business but, after seeing how vehemently they defend themselves against bad reviews online, it didn't seem worth the effort.

Agreed. Leaving a negative review for such a company is inviting a fight.

You legitimately can, but suggest you maintain clear documentation of everything they said and don’t say anything you are not willing to defend in court.

As you said, it’s not worth it.

Which seems like such bullshit. I see both sides of it, but if they genuinely give bad service or product, you should be able to leave an honest review without some kind of ridiculous fight. I’m not much of one to leave reviews anyway, which is hypocritical, because I use them so often to help make my purchasing decisions…..

A bad review is necessary, keeps the service/product provider on their toes to up their game and not loose track of why they're in business... unless you're one of the "big 3", those guys seem to get away with everything

Online reviews are easily faked - bad ones removed and in general not worth much.

I love when people say - “they have xx thousand reviews online” sure they do / and notice how detailed some of those are - that’s a red flag.

Who writes such complimentary reviews of people by name - comparing them favorably to other small names for example. I mean something like “good experience - Bill was really helpful” - legit. Some BS telling you how Bill Smith was the absolute greatest and far superior to someone over at Acme Supply and the price much less and the product better and just complete overkill - faked. Probably written by Bill Smith in his downtime under a fake name.

If you can see other reviews left by the person (ie Google reviews) - there’s a good start. A few dozen 1 review left in a row tips you it’s fake.

Then there’s good old fashion research BBB - checking others who may have used the business or just asking around. Car dealers are the worst for fake reviews - but just about any business now relies on their online reputation. Any one wanting to create good reviews can do it cheaply and will get away with it for a while. Ultimately though / the internet catches on and up with you reputation wise.

Well, they never did any work for me so it's not going to end up in court or anything like that. Just have the balls to tell me you don't want my business or are too busy or whatever instead of telling me you're waiting on something and ignoring all my calls and emails.
