Well Happy Birthday, Tyler! Unless it doesn't matter to you, then it's just another day in the craziness of life.

 

This shift would normally be my last in the usually schedule, but I get to do 2 more. OT FTW!

 

If you think you feel old now, just wait 5 years...

 

I know them feels, but I'm a bit further down the hill than you are. Birthdays just aren't a thing for me. IDC. I will put forth effort for friends and family who like theirs, but I'd rather not worry about my own. Not out of some "I feel old when it's pointed out" mentality either. I just do not care.

 

That can be said at any age. If you're really 5 years older than him, then you're both just youngsters. Don't believe me? Just wait 5 years.

 

True but it wasn't until I was in my 30s that something like climbing the stairs or sleeping wrong could make my whole body hurt for a day or two.

 

Just wait until you throw your back out with a sneeze or cough. That's when it gets real fun.

 

After 21, birthdays are worthless until you qualify for the senior citizen discount. I try to not celebrate mine, but I’ve learned over the years that my day is also for others. Still can’t square that circle…

Speaking of birthdays, am I the only one that honestly hates birthday cards? Or cards for any occasion actually?

Spend $5-8 so you can sign your name under someone else’s words. Then the recipient take 3 seconds to read it, smile, say “thanks” and then throw the card away. Nuts.

 

See, 21 was a waste for me, but at 25 I got a solid discount on car insurance. That was worth it.

Also not a fan of cards in that sense, but I have a friend who is the sweetest person ever and she feels awful if she doesn't send you a handwritten thank you card if you show up to a BBQ or birthday for the kid or something. Those mean something, but the rest? Waste of money.

 

I buy my cards at the Dollar Store so they're only $1.

My wife's family has implemented a no cards rule but no one ever remembers. Or my mother in law puts her artistic skills to work and makes one.

My wife loves cards but they have to have a personal message in them so I'll buy her a card and write something nice but she's the only one I do that for. She actually has a box of all the cards she's gotten over the years that she re-reads from time to time.

 

18 is the last important one here until you become a senior.

 

Okay, hand written cards are definitely not included in my rant above. Putting your own thoughts into something makes it truly personal and meaningful. A “love ya” written in crayon means more to me than some b.s. paragraph written by a stranger.

 

Same here. Except Christmas cards that don't open, we keep those around for the holidays.

I would always be like, so you wanna keep these birthday cards on the counter for a couple weeks then throw them away??

Nice! I haven’t had much time for fishing lately. Was pretty big into fly fishing in college. My oldest is almost 5 and thinking it’s about time to start going out on a more regular basis. Hopefully his patience is getting a bit longer than the last time I took him.

 

This is on my door at work.

 

I get a hand written one from my boss every year, always with a personal note written in it. He owns a $400mm/year construction company with over 200 staff people and he takes the time to hand write a card to every one of them.

I do the same for my staff of 20. But it's not about the card, it's about the gesture and taking the time to reach out. Outside of that and a few nieces/nephews - yeah, fuck that.
