Travel trailer gvw

Hey guys have 2002 2wd access cab. What's the most I can pull that will not hurt the transmission. I'm looking at 5000lbs gvw max travel trailer 4100 dry weight.

 

Is it a 4.7l or 3.4l? Does it have the factory tow package? If not you might want to look into putting an auxiliary trans oil cooler. Also might be worth grabbing a scanguage to monitor temps and such.

Do you have the owners manual? It should have the towing and capacity chart listed for each model, so you may need to do a tiny bit of reading. I believe a 4.7 automatic transmission access cab four wheel drive is 7000-7100 lbs depending on trim (SR5, Limited). As for not wanting to hurt the transmission, bring the service up to date with a fluid exchange, make sure it has a transmission cooler (if it doesn't already), and don't let it hunt for gears while towing. Turning off the overdrive and towing in D will help, but in some cases you could be find towing in OD, though it does add a fair bit of heat to the transmission. Heat is what kills most transmissions.

 

I think I will be safe in the 5000lb zone. I do have a trans cooler up front. Maybe I will upgrade the transr cooler any suggestions that you guys have been using or is the factory sufficient?

Good info found in here. Sound like your trailer is very similar to mine. Get a good WDH with built in sway control and a proportional brake controller.

 

I wouldn’t even think about towing a 5k trailer with mine. Plus, loaded weight will be much more than you think.

I tow a little pop up with mine and it’s supposed to weigh 1,900lbs. I went through a Cat Scale with it fully loaded with camp gear, and total vehicle weight was just under 9,000lbs.

Friend has this setup, and he brings the kitchen sink. He said his 02’ does pretty ok. It’s on stock tires and he added airbags.

 

What came with the tow package can I just add the stuff and increase my towing capacity

 

If your truck came with tow pkg, it'll list it in the build sheet when you sign up for Toyota Owners site @ https://www.toyota.com/owners

But basically, it came with the hitch, two or three extra harnesses to adapt out your factory wiring to support trailering, a 5-or 7-prong receptacle (I forget), and wiring across the chassis, and under the dash to support adding a brake controller. There may be other stuff, but I forget. I looked all this stuff up w/ @daveeasa trying to see what'd be needed to add some of this to his truck. Lemme see if I can dig up the key pieces of that...

Your 01 pkg might be different but you could check your yr Brochure in the sticky threads.

 

Looks like I have a trans cooler and 100amp alternator but did not have hitch.

 

Here's what I dug up, this is for my '06 only, I really don't even know if your truck had the tow package option, or if this information will work for your truck!:

The trailer receptacle harness part I have on my 2006 is 821690c020, it's the actual receptacle and pigtail to tie into the factory wiring out back.

My local dealership (if I order through parts.toyota.com) sells the entire hitch subframe assembly with receiver and plug (part number 520230C041) for $1100. It includes all this (NOTE: Toyota's parts system says this only fits '02+ trucks):

In '06 mine also included the larger alternator, 130A.

 

Ok looks like I can make it happen with a few parts already have tow hitch trans cooler and Alternator. Just need wiring

It looks like the part I listed (821690c020) is only for my truck, not your '01. Trying to see if I can look thru wiring images at that link to find the right harness.

 

I've recently narrowed this down as I may need to tow soon enough. There is an 11 position connector on the driver side of the rear bumper which has right turn, parking light, left turn and brake down one side then red, yellow, blue on the other side with a ground in the corner. Then the 3 large gauge has only the middle populated, presumably should be +12v but mine is not, I'm going to either try to add a fuse to get it alive or re-route it to fused battery power. That's the hookup for the controller which will combine brake and turn.

Then there's a separate 6 position connector with 5 pinned in the center of the rear bumper which has ground, red, yellow, blue and red w white stripe which is reverse.

The other 2 missing pieces for a 7 pin are +12v power (12 gauge or larger) and brake controller. I'll be on my own for those two but you can get 4 pin without that or 4 pin + reverse as well, just no brake controller of charger for brake controller battery.

I have heaps of photos too, just adding color here. I don't have the 11 position terminals and connector yet, it's inbound to me now.

My truck did not have the factory tow package so I'm assuming what I have is the same as anyone else who didn't have tow from the factory.

Basically the confusing part was the 3 {red, yellow, blue} wires from the 11 to the 6, meant to feed parking light, L trailer (brake + turn) and R trailer (brake + turn) from the controller output to the connector feeding the trailer. That threw me for a loop until I understood the idea, plug in controller off to the side, plug in trailer in the center.

 

It's not one of these, is it?

 

10988 might be the final 6. It’s the same as the taillight connectors as far as I could tell. The 11 position isn’t in there.
