I just had a new stereo installed and the guy said the brackets that hold the trim piece around the stereo and ac knobs are totally shot. Looking at the blowup for the dash panel, I can’t tell if the brackets are a separate part, or if I would need to replace the whole dashboard to replace those brackets. Anybody out there have any experience with this?

Or maybe it's the 'Instrument panel brace' shown here?

Can you get us a pic of what the guy is bitching about? This sounds like it may be a serious 'nope out' situation.

The screws that hold this thing in have no place to go. Anybody can’t tell if that bracket is part of the whole dash or a separate piece

So the piece in the picture is fine? You just need the piece that this actually screws into?

Mind taking a picture similar to what's posted below showing what your "guy" is talking about.

The bracket piece @shifty` is highlighting in red should take care of top 2 screws. The other 3 screws at HVAC control knobs should be available as part of HVAC control module or the rectangular HVAC module would just fall.

If the bottom 3 screws is all you have holding face plate in place, IMHO that's more than enough if top bracket is not available.

If it were me I'd try to get creative with some epoxy or JB Weld to fill and redrill/tap the holes. Or even epoxy in some speed nuts.

How can they be "shot"? They're not a wear or maintenance item by any means. They only get used when the panel is removed, maybe a dozen times or less typically in the life of the vehicle. More than likely your guy...um, er...let's say he may have contributed to the problem. Pictures please...

It’s in the shop so again so I can’t take pictures, but I think the pieces that Shifty and BubbaW posted should do the trick

the panel was loose when I got the truck. The dash cup holder won’t go all the way in also. I’m guessing the previous owner got into the dash and didn’t put it back together right. Once I get the truck home and get into the dash I’ll send some pictures

I appreciate all the help. Glad there’s a chance I won’t have to replace the whole dash

This was my very 1st thought on my 1st reply above. If there was a problem with them, it would've been noticed at removal, and the "guy" should've notified the customer. That's standard practice for CYOA (cover your own ass) in the industry. The fact this dude is hearing about it after the fact tells me either the person installing it (a) did it himself or (b) is trying to reinstall the panel incorrectly.

But I digress. OP explained it well enough. And OP, the trick with epoxy or JB seld to re-fill the mounting hole is on-point.

Yeah, but...the mounting holes have spring clips, so perhaps they are gone and thus "oversize holes"?

Look at the pic BubbaW posted a couple replies up. No spring clips in the HVAC control holes. I don't remember what's up top to hold the screw in.

I know in some of my older cars they used spring clips. I can't remember what's in the upper holes of my dash.

The upper is part of that bracket shifty mentioned in his 2nd post and there are no clips, not on fnt side nor bck side of bracket. The holes in bracket are simply sized to accept the original screws provided. I'll also add that the bracket itself does not come out easy peazy....don't ask how I know !

Sometimes with stuff like this, simply "deforming" the hole (i.e. flattening it, removing crown slightly) will close the hole enough to firm up the fasteners. I've had to do this with (for example) cowl fasteners on a previous vehicle.

Agree but if/when you have panel off, you'll see that the only way to deform the hole by flattening can only be achieved by removing bracket IMHO. Hopefully OP's bracket is indeed in place and can replace properly sized screws or drill a slightly bigger hole to accept bigger screws.

OP should have stayed off work today....suspense is a bitch :D
