A buddy of mine had just installed 35X12.50 Yokohama mud tires on his pick up truck recently. He got them mounted and balanced through a local discount tire. is the steering wheel shimmy supposed to happen with mud tires or does he need to go back for re balance? (first time MT owner)
    TIA!

No, the wheels/tires are not balanced correctly. MT, especially larger ones are harder to balance. Should be no shimmy in the wheel. He will feel some vibration at lower speeds however, from the big lugs hitting the pavement. Tundras are sensitive to wheel balance so they need to try again, may need a road force balance.

    echo for re-balancing.
i don't have experience with it, but have heard to lean towards a place to road force balance as mentioned above. have also had a buddy that did the balancing beads on his old jeep with 38s that his wife daily drove and didn't have a shimmy when he rode it on highway around 60-65. although i've heard conflicting things with the beads and TPMS

I bought my used 40s from a previous Jeep owner. Was worried that I’d have problems balancing them cuz the Jeep owner couldn’t and resorted to balancing beads. I vacuumed out all the beads, took it to a friend’s tire shop and they were able to balance it. It took a long time though but they got it done. Moral of the story - find a shop or someone specific at the shop that has a lot of experience balancing MTs.

Agree, the right shop can balance unless the tires or rims are bad. And those beads do not belong on a street driven truck IMO.

They should do road force balancing; my local one does but that's not to say they all do. If he bought the tires at DT, they should re balance for free. Took me a few trips to get my tires balanced out correctly.
