Somewhere between a whine and a groan, it sounds like my power steering pump is on its way out. I’m a repair noob. On a 2000 Tundra Limited, how hard of a repair are we talking? Would I want to do it myself, or what ballpark of a bill are we looking at if I take it to a good shop (I do have an honest one)?

Mine has been sounding like a whale in heat for at least a couple years now.

    And fluid levels are OK?

Don't get me wrong, mine has a tiny little moan to it also. Nothing like a whale though.

Yeah, a while back I had a PS leak on the hard return line screwed to that bottom bracket in the engine bay (due to salt corrosion obviously). Anyway, one day it got too low and I had to drive it a couple miles with the fluid low (bottom of return reservoir nearly empty) before putting more fluid back. Since that day it sounded like a whale in heat.

Strangely though, with the warm temps I haven't really heard it. Once the cold weather returns, it'll be back with a vengeance!
