So in the 2022 Tundra, the app on the car tells me that you have to choose between Apple Carplay and Phone when your phone is connected to the onboard computer/audio system. Anyone know how to receive both at the same time?

I have a 2020 but Apple CarPlay should be the same. Once connected to ACP I have full access to my phone. What do you exactly mean or what happens if you choose one vs the other.

With android auto when connected I can't use some of the phones app at the same time such as using waze on the big screen and then listen to a internet music source on the phone

In my truck, when connected to ACP through the cable, I have access to everything. I can use any map, google, apple, waze, etc. I can also use Spotify or any other music app simultaneously with maps. I can also be on a phone call and have the map on, obviously can’t play music but I end the call the music comes back on. Now if I am just connected through BT all I can do is music and phone calls.

You can still use your phone through Apple CarPlay. Is that what you are asking?

When you connect to the phone (via BT) it gives you the choice between ACP, and two other options above (forget exactly what they are, I think it's phone and media). If you select ACP you have access to everything. If you select one of the two above you ONLY have access to them. At least that's the conclusion I've come to. I have my wife/kids select the top two. I keep my phone on ACP. Otherwise they're apps are all connected (I think only one phone can be connected via ACP at a time). I like to have control when I'm driving. :)

Apple CarPlay gives you everything through the ACP app. The key thing is it requires both your Bluetooth and your Wi-Fi on your phone.

the other options give you only music (controllable via the native Toyota Bluetooth enabled app) and/or phone (again on the native app). This only uses Bluetooth and no Wi-Fi.

I have two phones. I have my personal device setup for apple CarPlay and my work phone setup just for phone.

So when I connect the iphone to the car via bluetooth or via the lightning cable I can choose the factory toyota apps or Apple Car play. However, when I use the voice command or even try manually to make a call via Appleplay it tells me to set up my device which is already set up. HOWEVER, if I choose to connect the iphone as a phone then it works 100% but if I choose to use the phone as "Carplay" it does not. Hear are some pics...

as per WWDC22, the new carplay has quite a significant improvement. So can the 2022/2023 Tundra be beneficial?

I think we all know the answer to that question. Toyota was one of the last to adopt CarPlay and I put 0 faith in them actually sending out an update to support those new features.

based on the digital dashboard of new Tundra, it should be capable to do so technically.

This right here. In order for apple carplay to work, you have to stream a lot more data than bluetooth is capable of. This is wireless carplay took a while to come out, most cars had to be corded. In order to handle the bandwidth needed, ACP uses both bluetooth and a closed wifi network.

So, to answer the OP's question, when a new phone is connected, you can either choose set up carplay which will set up the closed wifi network and automatically connect you every time you get in the truck. OR it will set it up just as a bluetooth connection to stream music and phone to the native toyota system.

It's certainly capable, but the point I think is that Toyota isn't a fast mover when it comes to change. I think we've seen the most out of carplay for the next few years, anyone buying and expecting anything to change for a while is kidding themselves (happy to eat my hat on this one!)

The truth is Toyota wants you to marry into their own Wifi and connectivity that you will have to pay for approximately $100 per year after the first years trial runs out. You would think after paying 60k plus for their new Tundra they could give you the connectivity that is built into the truck without charging more for it.

I think your mixing up functionalities. All cars with wireless CarPlay require use of an ad-hoc network because od the data streaming needs. It’s the reason it only recently became available from apple. Your phone still is able to use its own cellular connection while connected to an ad hoc network.

The Wi-Fi connectivity is completely separate. I’m also saying this from experience as I am in Canada and we do not get the Wi-Fi connectivity you get in the US, it’s not available even for purchase.

So I was having a similar issue and found this thread to help remedy. I found that when using the steering wheel command button a short press defaults to the Toyota Infotainment System and asks you to connect a phone (assuming your phone is defaulted to Carplay as the prior images you shared indicates). A long press will activate Siri and allow you to use Voice commands to dial, change music, etc through Carplay. Hope this helps.
