Has anyone added a Toyota factory backup camera system to a Tundra that did not come equipped with one? If so, what year did you try this on? And what problems did you encounter?

    Thanks in advance

Yes. No issues on a 2010 Limited w/o factory camera. You will need the camera and either the rear view mirror with a screen, or the factory nav head unit.

You can down this rabbit hole if you’d like but I’ll keep it short and sweet.
Oem system is a 6v or 9v system. You need to first address the head unit. Are you staying oem or going aftermarket?

If you go aftermarket you can add what ever you like to the 12v tailgate camera system.

If you want oem, small fold down over head screen or home link mirror with lcd screen, you need the matching oem tailgate camera.

Third option is a patch harness, this will allow you to use all oem parts AND plug into an aftermarket radio.

If you have an sr5 trim 07-13 you should be prewired at the tailgate/ spare tire area as well as overhead console. You can add home link with auto dim mirror and or the small flip down screen.

Pretty sure the flip down screen was only for ‘07-‘09 trucks. ‘10-‘13 they switched the pre wiring to the rear view mirror or head unit.

You could be correct, I know the plug is the same from the gentex rear view mirror to the overhead tiny screen. It’s a matter of preference.

For the patch harness and or oem options look at a guy named bobs automotive mirrors. But be forewarned his prices aren’t cheap.

Thanks for all the input folks. Found out the rear view mirror I need is $560.00 new from Toyota.....I am going to wait awhile and find a deal on a used one. I was able to score a used OEM camera from a 2012 tailgate.

I had a new head unit and a license plate frame camera put in my 2010. GREAT rear view picture and great Sony sound system for not much more than Dealer parts costs for camera alone.
