Not offended at all actually. Just might have struck a nerve as I was directly involved with both insurance companies in trying to get my mother taken care of medically and get a new car.

    lucky nobody was hurt.

seems like an awful lot of trailer for a 1/2 ton, but I am very conservative when it comes to that.

This is why when they say, I can tow x amount, you ask them, can you tow it safely. What people forget is the tow rating has nothing to do with emergency situations and how the truck will handle them. My 17 Tacoma could tow 6,800 lbs. I use to own a 25' boat that ready to fish was around there(6500). There was no way in hell that a Tacoma was going to tow that 25' boat safely, in a straight line yes. The 3rd gen is up to like 12k lbs, that's insane for a 1/2.

Speaking of, anyone have a clue when we might see the crash test results for the 22?

That must have been horrible for your family. I can sympathize with you due to past experiences.

I agree with @Nightshade Tundra, sounds like it was a commercial vehicle. Was it? (doesn't necessarily have to be a tractor/trailer to be in commerce either)

This isn't about the owner of this truck since we don't know the circumstances in this incident, but one problem I've personally seen a couple of times is people with a lack of experience or knowledge jumping staight into the biggest trailer or RV they can get instead of starting small and gaining that knowledge and experience as they move up in size over time.

I was stuck pulling the hay wagons with the tractor at 15-20mph for a year or two before my dad let me use the pickup for higher speeds and then even longer before driving the F350 and gooseneck.

How fortunate to have this situation explained and now you have an instance to reference.

I'm willing to bet with insurance claims like this a NDA (non disclosure agreements) is used. I've told some of my wifes crash story a few times on here, but with limited information for a reason.

After all these years I still can't back up a hay wagon on the first go. Gooseneck I can get it where I want it, but those hay wagons? Screw that. I'll drop it in front of the barn and pin it to the tractor bucket to push it in.

Double pivot backing is no joke. I would do the same damn thing with a tractor if available.

This individual may have been passing or had a large commercial truck pass them and induce a sway especially on long wind sail TT's. I have been cruising at 70 mph towing my camper and have a semi pass me and cause a pretty good sway. Nothing I would consider seat cushion butt sucking time...but enough to remember.

You should see what people use to pull center consoles around here, whether with single motors, twins, etc. Some of these boats dwarf the tow vehicle, and that includes crew cab duallies. Can't imagine how some of these folks get back up the ramp, much less stop at road speed.

That's why you see so many old 8N's with a front bar set up for connecting the tongue pin. Gosh backing those things up is impossible

Would think has little to do with being a half ton that is rated for what 12000lbs? More likely an inexperienced driver.

It was not a tractor trailer but the employment situation of the operator of the vehicle was a complicating factor if you catch my drift. And you would be right that I would prefer to keep the details a bit more vague than some would prefer for reasons that may or may not be obvious. The long and short of it was there were MANY factors that contributed to the ridiculousness of the situation but one mentioned from the lawyers was that the driver operating the vehicle outside of the acceptable parameters. Whether or not is was company policy or insurance related, I have no idea. But they tried to pin the fault on the individual driver vs the company / insurance…..it was a mess. My mother recovered fine after a few weeks. But it took months of back and forth and many thousands of dollars in lawyer fees to finally get the situation taken care of.

In the end, your Mom was ok…and in the small scheme of things that’s all that matters.

I figured that’s why some people think that nobody ever gets sued or has insurance issues due to overloading. I mean there are many law firms dedicated to this very issue if that tells anyone anything.

The insurance company will pay and move on. The chance of them prevailing in trial after declining coverage for too large of a trailer is virtually nil. Bad faith on the other hand would cost them multiples.

It has everything to do with it. Friend at work had to move up to a F-250 because his Dodge 1500 couldn't handle his travel trailer on a 2 lane highway or if it was windy. It would throw his truck around like a rag doll. You forget that manuf, including Toyota, are in a pissing match on who's the best. All they care about is numbers and who's are higher. Its a fact that a 3rd gen towing 12k on a 2 lane hwy with 18 wheelers coming in the opposite direction will not be able to keep the trailer in a straight line. Have you ever seen an 18 wheeler get toppled over by heavy winds? I see it going down to Key West all the time. 1/2 truck pulling at max capacity. You can see them sway from side to side. A 1/2 ton has no business towing 12k, just like my previous Tacoma had no business towing 6,800lbs.

Perfect example of using the right tool for the job. Half ton trucks were not meant to pull 30 foot trailers.

In the end mother nature wins. We were pulling a 9K 5th wheel up from FL to AL with a diesel dually. It was a 2 lane road with recently harvested fields on both sides. looking out to the left I saw what is commonly called a dust devil coming across the field. New it was going to hit us. Luckily no one in the other lane. It hit at the front end of the trailer, and pushed the back end of the camper half a lane over center. I reduced speed when I saw it coming but only got to around 40. Luckily the rig came back under control and we were fine.

I hope you purchased a lottery ticket and won. Either way you won. Had you been towing a TT, it might not have turned out so positive.

5th wheels handle a lot better except in a jackknife situation. Then you better take action quick before losing complete control. I got in one last winter towing two Jeeps on my 28’ flatbed. I hit the manual trailer brakes and put some power to the tow rig and it pulled out. Trailer went a foot or two into the other lane.

This guy in his F450 wasn’t as lucky.
