I bumped gas cap off

I was filling up this afternoon and accidentally bumped the gas cap off with my shoulder.

Is there a trick to snapping back in place. It sounds dumb, but the grooves that go in the receivers seem to work against one another?
Should I just take to dealership?

 

I would take it to the dealer and tell them you just saw it on the ground when you got in the truck in the morning. If you say you hit it they may not want to cover it.

 

That would be a lie and may lead you down the rabbit hole. If it is hard to remove on its own, they might think someone tried to get into the gas tank in an unauthorized way and may send you to see your insurance and file a claim. Maybe even police report.

I'd say: "hey gang, I accidentally bumped into it with my shoulder, any idea how I pluck it back on?"

They are usually good willed people and will help you out, but if they sense BS..........don't know what will happen next.

Besides, why risk contaminating your own consciousness?

 

From the way the tabs are aligned, it looks like you should be able to slide it on, side to side. That's what I would try. Good luck.

Since there is a stop in the middle, I would try left to right first.

 

Contaminating your consciousness? It's a car dealer, probably one of the slimiest institutions man has created. This world will eat your soul if you feel bad about lying to a car dealer.

 

Don't look like any broken tabs. The cover just slides on.

 

I bet that will slide right back on.

Yep you may want to lie to the dealership, they lie to you. It's the circle of life. "That cover just jumped off my truck"

 

The part still attached to the truck clearly has broken tabs.

I think that just dirt. The tabs are:


Usually 6 outer tabs holds the cover and prevent it from popping outwards. The center tab one is a claw that stops it from sliding out.

 

Went to the dealership and they snapped it back on.
It slides back on from left to right, as oriented in picture (slides toward the hinge).

I think this will become a common occurance for others.
Was filling up and turned towards truck and hit the cover from the inside side.
Didn't take much for it to pop off.

Sounds like a job for JB Weld Man!



Kidding. But, it might not hurt to slap a little adhesive or JB weld on the back side of the plate if it dislodges again.
