5300 or so miles on the odometer....today I returned from a camping trip to notice an oil leak (3 actually) under my Tundra.

Orientation of the photo is the right side of the picture is were the front of the truck was, the left side of the photo is towards the rear of the truck.

Guess I am calling the dealership tomorrow morning.

@Buellride - hard to say with stealth cloaking mode on. Take off the skid plate and post some photos from below and from above. Since your truck is brand new may just want to tell the dealer to fix it. Could be as simple as the drain plug on the filter housing being loose or could be more.

That big spot looks like water. Are you sure it’s oil and not your AC?

Not AC..not hot enough here for that

Yea calling the dealer. When I brought it in for 5000 mile check up they noted a couple oil return lines had "crusting" on the fitting. They already scheduled me for a follow on Tuesday next week.

Pulling the skid plate is more pain in the arse that the dealer should deal with.

I would be pulling the skid plate and doing a thorough look through myself. Last time I checked the one and only person you can trust 100% of the time is...............you. Knowledge is power.

Did you just have an oil change ? I'm guessing you had one at 5000 miles or so? Could just be residual from the change on the skid plate

Grrr....I opened the hood and discovered why I have an oil leak. The "service pros" @ the dealer didn't reseat the oil dip stick and it blew throughout the engine bay

If there's that much oil there may be something else going on. Some reason the crankcase pressure is building up.

Reason number 2,539,9048,938 why I don't go to the dealer. And I wouldn't take it back to get it cleaned up. They will probably use a 6,000 psi pressure washer on it.

Understand, but here is the rub....folks/businesses need to be held accountable for their actions. If I just "clean it up for them" then they will continue to have crappy QC in their business and persist in thinking that they have the best maintenance shop, etc. I don't let these things go......

As for the crankcase pressure, I hear your thoughts on this, though the spray pattern in the engine compartment is consistent with oil spraying from the dipstick port (sadly this isn't my first rodeo with a dipstick not being seated correctly, but how can you "beat" your child ;)).....so the dealership will fix their error or be held accountable in all sorts of "public" ways......

Sorry you are dealing with this. I have had numerous "free" oil changes from dealers over the years. I never took any of them. This is a perfect example of why.

I agree they need to thoroughly clean up their mess. But after that outside warranty work I would (and have) avoided them like the plague they are.

We tend to talk broadly about dealership service departments, but I think it's important to keep this in mind...

Most dealership service departments are broken into 2 categories:
    • ASE-Certified Mechanics - Grizzled veterans with years or decades of automotive repair experience. These folks tackle the big jobs like engine replacements, suspension work, heads, turbos, etc. They're usually pretty solid at diagnosis as well. They've clawed their way up the ladder...usually at their own time & expense...to get their ASE certification throughout the years. They've also spent (literally) tens of thousands of dollars of their own money over the years on their own tools since most shops require mechanics to buy their own. As a result, these folks won't touch an oil change job for love or money. Some consider it beneath them. Most of the time, the labor payout on a job like an oil change just isn't worth their time since they're likely making recurring payments on tools to the Snap-On, Mac, or Matco tool truck sale reps.
    • Lube & Tire Techs - Entry-level position. Usually young folks starting out in the automotive repair trade. 99% of the time, they're only allowed to work on the low-skill jobs like tires, oil changes, battery replacement, etc. 75% of these folks are little more than glorified "Jiffy Lube" technicians. The remaining 25% will go on to get their ASE Certification.
This is why you tend to get a ton of mistakes on the simple jobs. I don't like it, but it's an unfortunate by-product of the modern day service business model.

This is totally spot on, back in the day we avoided oil changes like the plague because we only got paid .3 hrs. flat rate for them, about $7.00. :(

Sucks...I would definitely take it back and have them clean everything up under there. I had a Toyota dealership forget to reinstall the oil cap on a spare vehicle a few years back (2004 Toyota Corolla). I drove it to work and got out smelling a burnt oil kind of scent. Popped the hood and oil everywhere under the hood. The underhood mat or whatever you call it was soaked in a few places as well. Make them correct it for you.

Are todays engine compartments mineral spirit safe? That's how we'd clean "under the hood" on aircraft. Use a siphon feed sprayer, start from the top and work your way down.

I don't power wash or even use a garden hose under my hood. Rather it look dusty than have a visit from the electrical gremlins.

Smart man. I watched my neighbor take a pressure washer to his Audi intake, valve covers, coils, wires… etc. I just watched in dismay.

At the dealership now and they are taking this very seriously. I told them that "this is a heck of a way to establish a relationship with the customer....". I am confident that they will rectify the circumstances around what happened (they are reviewing video footage of who touched the dipstick) and return the truck to an original state....we will see.

Check your oil level, then fully seat the dip stick. Do some spirited driving for a couple days and continue to check the dip stick is still seated. Crank case can easily blow the dip stick out. I understand this isnt your first rodeo. Although you are probably correct, its not 100% guaranteed that blow by didnt push it out.

I had one car with a particularly difficult to find dipstick tube. Back when there were service stations, one attendant just left the dipstick on the air filter. The next station caught it and brought it to my attention. To be honest I don't recall if there was any fresh oil under the hood. 70's Detroit V8s were oil seepers anyway.

I have almost no faith in dealership monkeys and do most maintenance my self. When I’m either tool or motivation limited, I found a great honest independent shop that does great work and is reasonable. Of course with warranty work your stuck. I think next time I’ll pass on the oil changes. On my truck the monkeys must have used an impact on my filter canister and I had to use a breaker bar to get it off which cracked on of the tabs. It was was an excuse to but the metal housing.

PS - may need a replacement hood pad if the oil won’t come out. Good thing you caught it before oil starvation and bearing seizure. That happened to a friend who is not mechanically inclined and never lifted her bonnet STS

I agree with bfunke and others who do their own oil changes and more. I had a 2000 Silverado on which I always had the dealer do the oil changes until I realized that they were routinely overfilling the oil (we're talking over a quart). Until that time, I'd never so much as changed my own oil, but since then I've learned to do much more of my own maintenance (thanks, YouTube) and will continue to do as much as I think I can handle before I hand over my baby to someone else, especially a dealership service department.

This is the level of quality that my Toyota dealers in Clearwater offer as well. I’m really starting to think I would’ve been better off staying with GM. GM trucks may be shit but at least the dealers are better.

Update on the quality of service I received at Toyota of Olympia....when I brought my issue to the Service Manager's attention, he took it VERY seriously and did everything to make it right (old school automotive guy that he was). I took in the truck this afternoon, he had a team on my truck for about 3 hours cleaning, assessing, and getting me back on the road. They first steam cleaned the entire engine bay (to include the hood pad), disassembled the skid plate and the Talon cat protection plate. Clean both plates and the entire undercarriage of the truck. Topped off the oil and all other fluids, washed it and then had the TechStream guy come over and flash my truck so that now: 1. I can roll all windows down via the remote by holding "unlock" for 2.5 seconds, 2. the back seat "something is there" warning is completely turned off, 3. seatbelt warning is turned off for the rear seats (turns out only the front 2 seats have sensors, the rear seat is based on a logic setting that if the rear door is opened or a seat belt is latched the truck will think that someone is in/is still in the rear compartment).

I think they earned my trust back for another go around.

Interesting that the TechStream guy told me no other 2022 Tundra owner had asked him to do anything on any other 2022 Tundras purchased there....
