Well, 15 days and 539 miles into this truck, I went out to start washing and found this…

What’s my best course of action to fix? What’ll it cost (ballpark)?

(ignore the water spots around it, just the circled area is chipped)

Call your insurance company. State Farm fixed mine for free. Might depend on your policy though.

Depending were you live small chips are inevitable if you drive on freeways and highways. Trucks constantly throw rocks. I try to stay several car length back from anyone and still have half a dozen on my 2018. I use the Toyota touch up pen to keep them covered so they don’t rust. On my red 2000 the clear coat failed and the leading edge of my hood has thousands so I no longer bother.

PS - when I lived in Phoenix that was the worst as they put crushed granite alongside the new I-10 and the spiculated stones were hell on windshields and paint

Reason #153 why I got self healing PPF put on my truck. That drove me crazy with my previous gen Tundra.

I got everything done forward of the rear fenders and I got the gloss black trim piece on the tailgate done since it's where I put my hands to close it. I got it done by a shop that only does that and coatings in Kansas City. I got it wrapped, then everything else coated. But you can just get the first 12 inches of your hood done and if the shops good, you'll barely be able to see where the film is.

Is that a surface chip or star? Hard to tell from pic. I have several surface kind of chip with no star and they are ok.
insurance pays for the chip repair ($50-$70 range) since its much cheaper than replacing the windshield but you have to take it in quickly before the stars expand.

It's his hood, not his windshield.

Much better these days. Three layer invisible film - as long as it’s a good brand. It’ll help prevent dings from rock chips. Also makes it much easier to wash, especially if u ceramic it
