So, I’m back to owning a Tundra - this time a 2020 Crewmax TRD. The truck came with a Pro Comp lift that, with an added coil spring pacer to the TRD coilover shock equated to about a 4” lift. Although I don’t really like the designation “overland”, that would probably best describe the way I go about any builds I’ve done. Currently I added a Leer shell and a Decked drawer system. I’m on the fence about a rear bumper - maybe even a dual swing out like I’ve done before - and I’m probably only going to do something like the Covert bumper by CBI up front. The tech guy I usually use did an inspection for me, and said he liked what he saw although he suggested the rear shocks would be the thing he would replace.

I have a 3000lb travel trailer - tongue weight about 250-300 lbs. - that also comes into the equation when figuring out leaf spring weight capacity.

I’ve purchased an Icon 57720P set of 2.5” piggyback rear shocks that can handle up to a 2” lift. The plan was to replace the TRD coilovers in front with a set of 2.5” Icons that can handle up to a 3.5” lift - the Pro Comp lift also included about a 2.75” spacer (I don’t really like, but that’s another story) that gives it the majority of the achieved lift height.

In my online search and visual inspection I found the Pro Comp kit came with an additional leaf spring and 1” leaf spring lift spacer. It appears as if the overload spring was inverted from factory so now its “in line” with the other leafs. The ride is smooth, but I do notice the rear feels a little slow (this may be to the lower grade shocks on there which will be hopefully solved with the new Icons).

I was watching one of the “88 Rotors” YouTube videos for their lifts on some Tundras, and I saw one where they installed the Icon Expansion pack that augments the factory leaf springs (the overload was now back in it’s original configuration). It looked like a fairly nice ride height when they were finished.

I have experience with the Dakar leaf packs - with and without the add a leaf - on a Tundra and on a Tacoma. I liked them, but there was some sagging over time with a similar build as I’m doing now. There was also some squeaking, but that could be mitigated by an occasional car wash spray out and some spray lube/coating. I don’t have much knowledge about the Icon leaf pack options other than what I’ve seen on line. It sounds like the RTX version is similar to the Dakars as the RTX come with an additional leaf spring that can be added, left out, or used to replace one of the other leafs. Also the RTX is advertised as being used for the “Overland” type builds. The Expansion pack augments the factory leafs to achieve it’s weight capacity (again I liked the 88Rotors build height). The Icon Expansion pack is about $280 while the RTX is around $750.

Wondering if anyone has experience with these two Icon options - maybe even someone who has had OME Dakars and has used the Icons as well. It almost seems as if the Expansion Pack achieves the same thing as the RTX by using the factory springs.

    Thanks in advance.
