2021 Fuel economy better than expected

I recently upgraded from a 2014 SR5 TRD OR 4x4 double cab to a new 2021 TRD Pro double cab (one of the last ones built).

I noticed the 21’s stock fuel mileage is improved from my 2014. My 21 has the factory tires and a lightweight configuration (double cab trd pro). I have the trd catback and trd drop in filter.

I have noticed 18mpg+ on recent trips, this is mixed driving, a/c on and some full throttle accelerations to hear the TRD exhaust roar. 19-20 mpg is possible if I really tried.

I am easily getting 16-17 mpg in city driving which is close to the highway fuel economy rating.

Anyone else with a 2021 notice this unexpected surprise?

    Too many, but not enough....
My 21 CM SR5 4x4 is getting pretty good highway miles as well. I can get 18-19 easy on the highway at 65 mph. I'm rockin E load BFGs, diamondback, ironman front bumper and full skids front and back with 4 people in the car and luggage. Absolutely cannot complain. City is just about as shitty as everyone else since that is when the added weight becomes a big factor, moving the behemoth from a stop is not easy. Luckily for me, we have a little Matrix for in city errands and such. Truck is pretty much a family trip and offroading vehicle.

Just got back from highway drive, 73MPH, cruise, AC on, stock plus diamondback cover (and the weight of what's in the bed) 18MPG.
Just checked the 2022 MPG thread. First post I see... 18MPG.

My 2021 4x4 CM gets 15 in the city and 18 on the highway if I keep it close to 70. I have had some city trips where I get to calmly cruise down a boulevard and I get 19+.

Bone stock other than Line-x spray-in bedliner and tonneau cover.

I'm getting about 15 city with mine and 18.5 average on the highway.

If I use AC they plummet to like 12/15

Same here. No clue how these dudes are saying 18-19. Maybe super flat areas?

Yeah, I'm normally about 12-14mpg daily in town stuff. The best I've seen on a decent drive (5 hours of road time combo hwy / a bit of city / and interstate) was 16.9 (according to the lie-o-meter), but I was really babying it...

I do think the bed cover does make a difference.
74mph, minding the distances to not have to apply the brakes, which is what really hurts.
Not giving it the beans going uphill, but maintaining speed, usually with cruise, but not if it's being stupid.
If you are traveling with a more aerodynamic auto in the family/friend group, then settling in behind them (safely) can help too.

Sometime I'd like to try 65mph and see what the difference is, but generally have places to go and don't need to get run over in the attempt.

21' crewmax, 2k on odo. I'm getting 12 city and between 16 to 17+ flat hwy (FL) w AC on at 65, stock michelins. Weight is myself, wife, and 2 kids. Extra weight includes steel C4 baja bumper w winch, decked, step rock sliders and cab height bed rack, plus dual compressor and misc gear. Be mindful of headwind or tail wind on the highway. 10 mph makes a difference for sure.

Feather the throttle, stay under 65, don’t use cruise, “coast” down long hills with your foot just barely on the pedal…it’ll coast a LOT better that way. Play a game called “Let’s Make That Blue MPG Bar As Long As Possible”.

Or just drive it like you want. You could probably save the same amount of money cancelling a couple of streaming services.

21 TRD Pro with a bed cover running 285-70-R18 Nitto Ridge Grapplers. I average 11-14 around town. I have seen 17 or so on extended runs. In my case, I think the the TRD Pro exhaust is behind it. The sound is so sweet it’s hard to resist a little punch every once in awhile! :)

I've been using the adaptive cruise control extensively as of late, setting it around 3-5 mph over speed limits on my work commute. Mileage is up significantly as it takes away my heavy foot. With 285/75/17's I've been averaging 16.5 with a mix of town and highway. Before really using the cruise, I was lucky to get 14. It probably adds a few minutes to my commute but decent savings.

I agree with the guys saying MPG isn't the main driver for owning the truck, I was just surprised at how easily it achieved better mileage than my old 2014. And trust me, I cant help myself from rolling into the throttle on this thing every day I drive it.

Also I think the double cab's must be lighter which I think is why some of you crewmax guys are struggling to see this kind of mileage.

I still cant stand the look of the factory tires though so as soon as I change those my mileage will be out the window haha
