Convert cluster to metric for a move to Canada

So I’m moving to Canada and I’m told they want a metric gauge cluster.

Does anyone have any ideas on how to change this thing over to Metric.

It would appear that I need to change the whole cluster and that the miles are stored in the cluster itself.

 

Say whattttt? Specifically for the mph?

 

That’s what I’m told. They want the main reading on the gauge cluster to be in KPH.

 

My first tundra I purchased was used and came from Canada, the dash cluster was the same as the US version, the only difference was the headlight indicator was a different style

 

Is the truck a 2018 as your profile mentions? Does it have the digital speed readout in the center screen.

If so you can pretty easily convert the Speed and Odo to Km. I think the needle gauge has both units printed on it. I would think having milage and digital speed in KM would be good enough

 

Yep is a 2018. The needle gauge had both but I’m told the larger set has to be in KPH.

I was toying with the screen and I can’t seem to get a digital speed readout to show up in KPH unless I’m just missing something.

 

Buy a cluster on eBay? I have a 2014 Canadian cluster I got there (not trying to sell it)

 

It's odd they demand that, we moved back from Mexico in 2006 & brought a CR-V we bought there that had KPH primary the US did not care.

 

I imagine they wouldnt care since if you forget you are in KPH, you would actually be travelling slower than the speed limit in the US. If you you go with the MPH number in canada you would be going pretty damn fast.

I actually had a canadian model honda accord years ago and every once in a while I would forget its in KPH and found myself driving like 50 on the highway.

 

It's funny you mention that, when we sold it in 2010 we had a hell of a time getting 'Muricans to grasp the premise that 100k (or so) kilometers was 62k miles.

 

Yeah… we really should be using the metric system like the rest of the world. I mean, in any scientific capacity you’re using it anyway but it’s really silly to continue to buck the world standard for no good reason.

I think there is somthing in settings to switch the digital speed readout to KMH, I know I have done it before on my 2018.
If there is no option on the screen, I know it can be done with a CAN Bus message.

 

You are correct. The setting to turn on the digital speedo is in the “I” tab and on the opposite side is the “gear” tab. In the gear tab there’s a few options to change imperial to KPH. It’s the second kph option.

It used to be that as long as the digital readout is in Kmh, the gauge itself was irrelevant. The Canadian models have both readouts on the gauge face. The kmh is in bolder print with mph below it as shown in the right side of the photo. If there was a way to open the cluster, couldn't you just replace the gauge face.

Yes, it should be accepted and you will get a little sticker that says “odometer is in miles”.

out of curiosity what is it you dislike about Canada, or conversely like better about the USA?

 

When I was young I used to swap gauge faces on cars from the 90’s regularly. In this day and age I’m not sure I could even get one for the tundra

 

I’ve never heard of an imported American vehicle needing a new gauge cluster to show km/h as the bigger numbers. I’ve owned a couple USA vehicles as well as many family members over the years.

also our country will be great again once trudope is gone. Much like the USA after yours is in a nursing home.

 

Without getting political, I like freedom and inalienable human rights. We don't have that in Canada.
