I bet they do get 2-3mpg on average, but situational things may change that.

All these modern small displacement engines get around the same MPG towing as the older V8's. All the improvements have been made when not under high load where the huge displacements had a lot of pumping losses and were not efficient. So when you start running at 75+ mph and are on larger tires, now your starting to approach that situation where the truck is under heavier load even without a trailer and its going to start to align closer with the older engines.

I see you have a F150 Eco with bigger tires. I'd love to see some good tests of mpg vs speed for the small turbos vs v8. Towing results indicate that efficiency is poorer for the turbos (this is at high altitude which I think will result in more boost, sooner): https://tfltruck.com/2018/06/mpg-challenge-most-efficient-truck-towing-listed-specs/

I think one of the biggest factors in both the performance and mileage of the truck (other than big tires, lift kits and driving/accelerating fast) is the 10 speed tranny, that thing is amazing. Whether towing or empty it's always in the right gear and not hunting back and forth.

The new Tundra and F150 did a towing test earlier this year on TFL and got very high MPG's. I will see if I can find them, but I am pretty sure they beat the V8's on the same day by a decent amount. And, from that list you sent, the ONLY V8 that scores exceptionally higher is the one GM 6.2L.

The problem with the TFL scoreboard is that they are doing the tests on different days in different conditions. My F150 Ecoboost has been towing the same TT for almost 5 years now and I have seen anywhere from 6.7 mpg to 10.8 mpg depending on wind. Its so hard to compare if you are not running the trucks down the same road at the same time with the same trailer.

Using Ford as the benchmark is also an issue. Ford tends to undersize the cooling system(both the radiator and intercooler) on the Ecoboost trucks and so I think they take a hit in MPG's while towing because they are forced to go rich under high load. Additionally, Ford uses conventional manifolds on the 3.5L and they have to protect them. Ford literally just released an updated design for the 2011-2016(yes, ~7 years after the last one was made) 3.5L manifold because they warp so much.

Edit here are some of the videos I was thinking of:

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OFLTBPuedjk&ab_channel=TheFastLaneTruck
There was def another one where they had the Ram 1500 with 3.92's vs their 2022 Tundra with a travel trailer and I cannot seem to find it.

    Here it is:

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lftJi5gBKok&ab_channel=TheFastLaneTruck

The tundra absolutely clobbers the Ram here loaded.

Yes, TFL does a lot of things they call "real world"... which is just a euphemism for a poor test. They do a loop at least, but they don't seem to worry about drafting, speeds aren't consistent, conditions are all over the place, and they rely on the precision of the gas pump turning off at precisely the same fill. I could be wrong... but I think the fuel computers on modern vehicles should be very consistent; once you determine the % it is off, it's a much better gauge.

I have to drive about 30 miles before I get to a decent stretch of road that is semi flat (<2% grade). One of these nights I plan to gratuitously burn some gas doing out-back runs and see how consistent the fuel gauge is.

And going to your question about MPG with my truck. Mine is probably the worst F150 out there being that its a Screw, 6.5' bed, 4x4, 3.73 gears, and weighs 6200 lbs empty. But, with all that said, I used to average ~18.5 summer and 17 winter when I had 275/60R20 Duratracs on the stock wheels. With my 315/70R17's I get around 17 mpg summer and 15.5-16 in the winter. So I lost about 1.5 mpg going to the larger tires.

I didnt have the stock Bridgestone Potenzas on it for even a year before I bought the duratracs because they were so bad in the snow, so I can't really comment on how it did completely stock.

Am impressed with my 2022 1794, I logged 100,000 miles on an 18 then 19 combined for work start stop gravel highway not much city, usually sat at about 13.6mpg, the 2022 now has 9500 miles and shows 15.9mpg, for me that’s a significant apples to apples improvement.

At 1700 miles on stock setup I was averaging 15.5-16 mpg city and 19-21 mpg hwy. Since upgrading tires to Nitto ridge grapplers 275/65/R20 I have taken a hit and my city is averaging 13.5 and highway 15.5-16 mpg.

I seriously can’t see how anyone can complain about the 22’s mileage. Even on 35’s with a level my mileage is considerably better than my 17 got with factory size wheels and tires.
My 17 got 14-15 in town and 17-18 hwy.

With 35’s and a level on my 22 I’m seeing 16-17 in town and 20-21 hwy.

just picked up and drove my 22 trd sport crew/short bed 400 miles from Napa Valley down to LA and averaged 19.4
I did notice a couple of times while driving, I would get up to 90 mph (unknowingly, as it didn't feel like I was speeding) but it would shift into the higher gear and consumption would show between 20-25 mpg on the gauge. After I noticed it, I tested it and got up to 90 mph and it did the same thing, 20-25mpg on the gauge FWIW

3 days in a row on my cross country trip, towing/hauling 4200 lbs at highway speeds I’m in the 17s (non-hybrid)

Trip so far was from the beach in NC to Dallas TX.

I’m honestly pretty impressed. Best I’ve seen in the truck was empty load @23.6 MPGs over 300 miles.

City Driving usually always sits around 16-19 so it definitely does not perform well as an errand runner/city commuter.

12,000 miles on my ODO and overall I’m still very happy and impressed with the truck.

 I think you got some good ones. Tires can have very different rolling resistance, especially among ATs. The ones I have (Hankook ATMs) are very good in this respect, but they stopped making them. I've been eyeing the Wrangler Territory AT in 325/65r18 (35x13), since it is lighter, D load rated, T speed rated, pretty cheap, and looks good.

got 20.0 mpg on a 600 mile trip of mostly mountainous highway driving. Light load, just the wife and baggage.

I have gotten up to 24 cruising on a flat highway doing 60 mph

Around town it is 13-17 mpg. Eco, normal or sport modes seems not to matter much.

What 34s are you running? I think I may go to 34s but taller tire. Maybe 285 70 r18

Update: 4x4 TRD off-road Limited 6.5 bed just hit 6,000 miles. Never had a tank average below 18.3 mpg unless towing. Most tanks with a mix of town, freeway and highway hit at 19.5. I did tow my families 27 foot Avalon tri-toon today 180 miles. On flat ground was getting about 12mpg at 65 mph. When I hit the mountains to go up 4,000 feet I reset the mpg gauge and got 8 mpg driving windy mountain roads. All in all…I’m stoked on the gas mileage. Was getting the same in my 2007 Tacoma.

The EPA sets the mpg, not the manufacturer.

10 days drivin. NC to CA. Loaded up w/ 4200 lbs total (boat + bed).

Reset prior to trip and first two days to see. Best was 17.2. I’m at 16.0 total now.

Truck tows phenomenal in tow/haul mode through the mountains.

I’m at 13xxx on the odometer now.

Well, the manufacturer tells the epa the figures, and the epa can choose to test and confirm those numbers. There's a link in this thread somewhere where they confirmed that they only really spot check less than 10% of vehicles though.

I have idea on the percentage that the EPA will test but would appreciate the source of that information. Could you imagine the backlash if Toyota was caught fudging the EPA number? I don't think Toyota would risk it.

It’s interesting you mentioned what the EPA checks. The EPA tells you which vehicles it checks here: https://www.epa.gov/compliance-and-fuel-economy-data/data-cars-used-testing-fuel-economy

EPA checked the 2022 Tundra and a few other Toyotas.

1200 miles, 4x4 Platinum non hybrid, mostly city driving very minor highway driving. 3inch front 1 inch rear spacer leveling kit, 35's Nitto Ridge Grappler, 20 inch KMC wheels. Can't seem to get above 13.4 mpgs. Anyone else experiencing the same? I know I would take a hit but dang this is making me want to trade it in for a hybrid and keep stock wheels.

Are you calculating true mileage due to the 35's or just going by the dash? Bigger tires makes the speedo and odo read low. Mine is 5.5% low on my 16 on 34's according to GPS.
Also, you're lifted 3" and on 35's. You can't have your cake and eat it too
