Took my pup to the vet yesterday for a checkup and he gave me a nexguard chewable for my boy to try (anti flea and tick meds).

Got home later and researched it a little bit and was horrified...

Bunch of side effects being reported in the dogs (including death and blindness) and even in the humans as well just from handling them.

Currently researching milk thistle and other natural ways to detox my dog before he has any of the side effects.

Moral to the story is dont let your vet convince you to give your pet something before researching it!

if your dog ate it very recently, try hydrogen peroxide to induce vomiting?

Charcoal tablets are usually prescribed after eating something uncool if you missed the vomiting window....

**I'M NOT A VET** I just have a dog that eats a lot of things she shouldn't, hence why i think I know about things above. I've called poison control more times than i can count.

as for fleas & ticks...I'm a huge fan of frontline... not remotely natural or eco friendly but if it would work on me, I'd be pretty tempted to put it on my neck to stop me from picking up ticks.

I've never given my dog Nexguard but he uses Seresto collar which is good for 8 months. By far it's the best that has worked for him, no fleas or ticks

I use BRAVECTO for both of my shepherds. It's a oral pill that lasts 12 weeks. Goes into effect 2 hours after giving it to them. All the guys in my job use it for our working dogs.

My brother in law was having an issue with his dogs and once he tried it he was sold. IMO it is the best thing out there and it works with pretty much no side effects. Bellow it's the link for it if you want to look into it.

    IT'S JUST MY RECOMMENDATION.

My GSD/Husky mix takes Bravecto and it's been great. Zero problems. She's a picky eater but eats the Bravecto with zero problems. We also give her the shots for heartworm.

We use it on our three dogs and haven't had any issues so far. We have a pit, a boxer and a ridgeback (all muts) and I haven't noticed any side effects. The only reason we switched away from flea collars or topical treatments was the birth of my second son. He uses the dogs like a jungle gym and we didn't want him to ingest any chemicals.

Makes me feel a little better that none of your 3 experienced side effects. Even if mine doesn't I don't think I can ever give to him again after some of the stuff I read. There are also 75 cases right now on humans being effected by petting / getting saliva on them from dogs on nexguard (terrible rashes etc.) so keep an eye out for the little one!

My pup has been on it at the recommendation of our vet for the last 4-5 months. No ill effects whatsoever.

I use Trifexis for my Husky but the vet says I shouldn't use the same for our new puppy Aussie because one of the ingredients can kill the breed. That said, she recommended getting Nexguard for the Aussie and reading about it online -- albeit mostly in particular to Aussies -- netted mostly positive reviews.

There are always going to be edge cases since every dog is different.

My wife works as a veterinarian surgical tech. She said she would never use Nexguard on our animals. We always use frontline. The drug reps are giving away tons of bonuses and goodies to vets for recommending it.

Hmmmm. Interesting. I've been giving it to my dog nexguard and heart guard for over a year. I've never heard anything g about this. Time for some googling I guess.

Well, googled it. Throwing that stuff away. I'm trying frontline.

Yeah it seems that most cases I am reading about the dogs that suffer serious conditions are smaller breeds. My fat boy is 100.1 lbs so hoping he wont see any bad effects.

I was just upset with myself for not researching first, because as @TNTundra08 has just found out, some of the stories are pretty bad and there are over 4000 cases reported already.

Can you share your sources please? I'd like to do some more research myself.

A lot of my info came from comments/links in different posts on this facebook group that is pretty much dedicated to raising awareness: It may be best to research based on your dogs breed, age, etc. such as Spvrtan did but mine is a mix so I can't find any real solid info from other people.

Just typing "is nexgard bad?" on google will open up some pretty nasty reviews! I'm sure most dogs breeds aren't effected much by it or vets wouldn't carry it (how could they?), but it's just not worth the risk for me since there aren't many ticks in my area just fleas and he gets a bath once a week or so.
