    Hey Toyota Fam,

I need your help. I looked at this 06 Tundra today and it seems like the frame was painted black. It appears to have rust that was covered up (see pic of trailer hitch). And the wheel well was painted black. The seller said that the detailer probably painted the wheel well as a part of cleaning it up. The truck was in SC for most of it's life and then in the mountains of NC for 3 years.

Are any of the pictures concerning? Thanks for the help!

At first I thought someone spraypainted over rust on the frame.

But the more I look back over it, it looks like the frame has been replaced, and this is new rust. I can't tell.

My take is: This doesn't look like a 20 year old frame. But I can't tell what's been done to it. Has it been sanded and sprayed over, or has it been replaced?

Seems sketchy. I'd want to look up the history on the truck you'll get at the Toyota Owners site, see whether the frame has been replaced. Otherwise, I'd want to know hy the framerails are so shiny. Because the paint should be way less shiny after 15-20 years than what I'm seeing.

    PS -

CarMax will typically show you where a truck was registered, so you can truly see the history of it, where it's lived.
Also, if you want to know where something has been driven, look at the fasteners. Rusty boltheads under the hood of the engine bay, for example, are a red flag.

    Do you mean CarFax?

I'm on CarMax's website but not seeing where to go to find the history...

    Thanks!

Frame is still in excellent condition even if painted over. The bubbling you see appears to be only surface related. You can easily wirebrush it over and re-apply something more resilent like POR-15.

I would definitely check the history to see if the frame was replaced or not to get an idea of the history if you're concerned.

To me at least,it looks like a replacement frame that was only touched up to cover the new rust that formed. I have a hard time believing the whole thing was painted over since you cannot get into every nook and cranny to repaint it with precision without separating the frame from the vehicle.

I don’t see a detailer painting the wheel wells. Also, this appears to be over spray. Even in a SW state (CO) we don’t have salt, but it’ll have ur standard surface rust.
This photo (from what I can see) also shows why appears to be a new shock? How do the upper arm bolts look?

Personally, I would pass as it already has red flags (IMO).

Also frame looks freshly painted. Tail pipe looks freshly painted. Body panels look freshly cleaned on the underside. Rust is starting to bubble through the paint already. Maybe has already had a frame replacement and they were coating surface rust? Some of the bits are pretty cancerous though. Hammer inspection of frame and check all the little bits. Could still be a good truck if 80-90% of the rust abatement has already been done.
