Rarely do they leave me a VM. If the caller is not in my contacts I don't answer. The one thing I really hate about them is when driving and they interrupt a good song.

Expecting to hear a great stereo system in a 2022 Cadillac with a Bose system and 15 speakers,,,, and it sounded as bad as the Tundra stereo system. That made me angry that they would ask those prices and and have a crappy stereo in a new car??? :)

No apology needed, andim not upset. I may have misinterpreted your intent.

It's just a complex multi company endeavor and on top of that these calls seldom originate on a major carrier. The spoofing is similar to how a VPN "changes" the originating IP. Well, the newer cellular runs on VOIP which is Voice Over IP. Same kind of masking and routing things can be done.

Now, if the call originated on Verizon, then yes Verizon could tell, but when it is handed off from another carrier the originating number may not even enter into Verizon's system. It only shows as the spoofed number. Combine that with the big companies being so big they can't track what they're doing. Lumen (formerly Century Link) doesn't even know what properties they own.

Cellular is vast, populated by many companies, and so complex that it all runs on PFM, Pure F**king Magic at times.

Isn't the old saying, "No highs, no lows, it must be Bose."

Wife's car has the "Premium" Bose system and it's nothing to brag about. That's got to be the most over rated, over hyped company ever. Never heard a system of theirs that I've liked.

I was very surprised and expected a heck of a lot more. I told the sales lady to take 4800 off of the price because it needs a stereo replacement. They said not happening so we walked. Keeping the truck and enjoying my system from Taco Tunes,, I do not drive that much so that and keeping my foot out of the pedal I’ll make the best of current fuel costs.

My Wife's Nissan Armada also has a Bose system in it and isn't the greatest. It's supposed to have a subwoofer under the drivers seat, but you would never know it even with the bass cranked all the way up. Good enough for her and the kids but would drive me nuts if I had to drive it everyday. Doesn't even come close to the JBL that's in the Tundra which is "ok" by most people's standards.

Wasn't that great in my Caddy ATS; the non-Infinity system in the Grand Cherokee I traded the car for was better. Of course, it was also better than the factory system in my current Tundra too.

I had an Infinity system in my 2000 Dodge Dakota that was pretty good for what it was and the modest price they charged at the time. I've always liked JBL and Infinity speakers, slight edge to JBL because they're generally smoother and less harsh in the high ranges.

I returned 2 home theater systems over the years for the same issue. When I'm watching a movie and shit blows up, I want to feel it!!!

The surround part and the tingy pingy sounds were always good w/Bose but no depth to the low end. Ended up w/an Infinity reference and Klipsch reference series after those returns and they were both cheaper and better!

I always press 1 when I answer a number I don't recognize. That way it takes me to a person and I can make the feel like crap for the day (at least).

I didn't think about the VOIP aspect - I agree that can make it impossible to track. And I also didn't think about the myriad number of smaller cellular companies, which I can see also complicating things. I obviously oversimplified things a LOT.

But to play a little Devil's Advocate, let me ask this: Can the big companies (AT&T, Verizon, T-Mobile) at least check the "originating" number to see if it is on their own network, and if so, verify that it came from there? I ask this because I receive a lot of spam calls from numbers that only differ from mine in the last four digits. The next step from there would be to share information between them (the big companies) to verify the originating number. However, I understand that this data sharing would be a monumental task to accomplish.

That's a way more complex question, because not all networks are created equal. There's lots of different manufacturers of the core equipment and they have different interfaces, capabilities, and don't always talk to each other in the same way. Some providers like Lumen are actually made up of their original network and those smaller networks that they have acquired, too. If it was all a single network issue, then it should theoretically be possible to identify and shut down.

The numbers that are similar to yours are the spoofed numbers and the actual calling number can be completely different. Combine that with international numbers being different configurations altogether, being routed through multiple carriers, and it's difficult to track down.

Sometimes we get lucky and can track it to a region, and all calls from there can be blocked. The risk with this is, especially for large carriers, is that you may block legitimate calls.

For example, a small carrier in say Alaska might see a huge influx of spam calls from Egypt. Well, the odds that there are thousands of Eqyptian immigrants in Alaska is really low, so that carrier could probably block everything out of Egypt with low risk of disrupting customers. Now, if AT&T sees a bunch of Egypt calls flooding into New York, or LA... well a lot of those could be legitimate calls so they can't just block it all.

Identifying and blocking individual numbers is made difficult by the multicarrier hand offs and spoofed numbers. Sure, you might see a single number making tons of calls that link to spam, but is that the actual number, or is it one of your customer's who has had their number spoofed? I've gotten calls from people saying they got calls from me about spammy stuff, and I call like 4 people. My number has been randomly spoofed and I'd be pissed if my carrier nuked my number for that.

Wow, somehow I assumed that the phone networks would be in better shape - and more similar - than any random set of data networks. I guess I was WAY off. It's amazing that they all work together at all.

Thanks for taking the time to spell it out for me.

They spoof your number thinking that they are tricking you into thinking it is a local call.

I know very well "why" they do it. I've been trying to find out more about possible ways to block them from spoofing, and assume that numbers in the same prefix block are generally "owned" by just one of the phone companies.

I HAVE to answer calls from unknown numbers a lot due to my job. But I have gotten to where I don't answer any number that has the same prefix as I do unless they're in my contacts.

Nah. It's a miracle any of it works sometimes. Also, the level of interconnectedness is insane. Somebody can cut a fiber line in Florida and it'll kill service in Wyoming. I've seen it happen. It's completely nuts.

Going to the dealer for the first oil change and them telling me they donʻt have time to correct a computer recall on a 2021 1794 Tundra. They sent me the recall notice and set up the first appointment. Also I have a rear seat belt that wonʻt rewind since it was new and they wouldnʻt even look at it to see if it was a quick fix or not. They said it took a special tech to even look at it and they donʻt have techs just standing around. Then they wouldnʻt even set an appointment unless I gave them $100 for a diagonstic charge!
