First time Tundra owner. 2022 1794. Very frustrated and disappointed with MPG.

Yes I'm lying to strangers on the internet about my fuel mileage because...uhhh...reasons...

my 2022 would estimate 20% better fuel mileage than my 2019, I’m quite impressed so far.

 

We need a forum rule that for anyone complaining about mpg needs to post the "drive pulse" details in the app. We'll quickly see why they are getting low numbers.

 

My 1794, 2500 miles is showing 18.2 on my dash, have not re-set since picked up at dealer. Driving off the lot it read 4.3 mpg, obviously there had been a tremendous amount of idling somewhere along the line. Had 16 miles on it when I bought it. Part of that was a 10 mile test drive by me. Recent trip returning from my hunting cabin, approx 40 miles, 25.4 mpg. A few other short trips around, getting low 20’s.

 

It’s really not hard at all to get the advertised MPG, or very close to it if you don’t drive like an idiot.
Stay out the boost and these trucks get phenomenal mileage. WAY better than my 2017 Tundra could ever even come close to.

That's interesting. I have a 1794 and the best I have seen is 18.1. My commute is 25 miles each way on the highway. Cruise set at 75. Maybe if I drop it another 5-10 mph I can see what everyone else seems to see.

 

So, 17-18 in town and 22-23 highway. Then, you get 20mpg combined? I’m at 16 combined in my 5.7 truck with a few significant mods (tires that are 24lb heavier per corner being the most significant). I just get up to speed fairly quickly, drive the speed limit, and keep it out of my 2nd overdrive gear around town.

Just saying, phenomenal is relative. We could all be getting 50+ in a Prius. The difference between 16 and 20–even when gas is 4.30/gal—isn’t enough to move make me go buy a new truck when mine is paid off.

 

And they cant post unless they have done at least 3 full tanks of gas, pump receipts, and the math showing the real calculated mpg factoring tire size; not what the dashboard says. Otherwise this thread is just a waste of time.

 

I got 13-14 in town and 17-18 hwy in my 2017 if I drove like a Grandmaw. So yeah, I’d call what I get in my 22 phenomenal in comparison.

Edit: No ones telling you to trade your truck in. Not sure what any of the points you’re trying to make are or why they’re even relevant to the thread in the first place lol.

The thread is about Gen 3 mileage. Not any prior Gen mileage.

 

Lol. The point is, I agree with you that he should be getting better fuel economy than he is, especially since I do nearly 50% better than him in my poor sorry 2nd gen guzzler.

The second point is, we’re talking about trucks. There isn’t a non-EV truck on the road that gets “phenomenal” fuel economy, yours included. It’s still a Lego brick that only breaks 20mpg combined if you drive like your grandmother.

 

2019 Limited with 30K miles. Just made a trip to Arizona averaged 18 city and highway. Drove slightly above the speed limit. We had a 2013 before this one and it averaged 16. Look they do not get the MPG of other brands, but they do not break, they run forever, you do not spend money on maintenance and resale is higher for numerous reasons, one of which is dependability and loyalty of owners. I haul a Lance truck camper and a jumping jack trailer with our side by side and a kayak trailer. Look ridiculous, the truck does it with ease in the mountains of Colorado, Idaho and Wyoming. The powertrain with the 343 rear (the reason for the MPG) is a great combo. The minute you push tow the mileage goes to 10 or 11. Suck it up and look at all the positives. They are great trucks.

 

Something that should be remembered: Toyota's have a very long adjustment/break in period. That's a factor. Second: the "advertised mpg" is done on absolute perfect conditions; new tires with perfect psi, sea level, perfect weather, perfect roads, warmed up mechanics, gentle acceleration and handling, etc. Not everyone drives the same. Finally, Toyota spent millions of dollars on the design and aerodynamics of this truck. Changing anything to that in any way (like tires, level kits, wheels, bed liners, trailers) will change the truck fundamentally. Do I get the advertised mpg? Heck no. Do I love how it looks? Very much so. Do I love the sound and speed I get when I slam the gas pedal? Oh, lord yes . I think that there were too many people that set the bar too high, and were disappointed that it wasn't literally perfect in every way. There is no perfect truck, but I honestly think Toyota knocked this truck out of the park.

Have a buddy who always complains like this about his vehicles. Uses his brakes more than any human I've seen. Even mid-turn and always takes off slow. I never drive with him.

Comparing gas milage depends so much on driving style it's never a good marker. Driving conservative doesn't always equate to better milage. Best MPG advice I've ever received:

There's a break even and typically the longer you're accelerating the more gas you'll use. Most break even at about 40% throttle when accelerating. Then stay off the brakes. Consistency is where you'll save more than anything else. Don't accelerate 3/4 of the way up a hill. Take speed into it. Always give the finger to slow people in the left lane and remind them that the prius doesn't help if the makes everyone else waste gas cause they drive like a dip-ass.

 

Give it more than 5 minutes to break in. As a few others have said, it will improve with time. Even my 2014 F150 Ecoboost took about 5000 miles to really break in and probably didnt hit peak MPG unit 10k or so. I drove cross country with 1200 miles on the ODO, 2300 miles all highway, and only got 13 mpg. Now I don't get below 16 or so with 35's.

 

Maybe he expected to get close to the estimates? Not that he was gunna get 50 mpg.

 

I think I agree with lots of this, but I would pitch it more as “use your brain, not your brakes”. Look ahead and use throttle and momentum considerately.
“Not using your brakes” and “giving anyone the finger” kind of misses the mark in my opinion.
Leave a safe (3+ second) following distance and slow drivers or folks slowing down for turns in front of you won’t require as much deceleration and subsequent acceleration. drive friendly, smooth, and safe and your mileage will likely be at its best.

 

I'm at 3,000 miles currently in my Limited and getting 18-19 mixed driving. I feel the tonneau cover helped with the MPG's

 

Agree 100% if timed properly, you can avoid using brakes altogether!! Tundra is a fantastic roller!

 

I get 12 to 14 mpg on a 2021. To get these low of numbers I have to idle hours everyday. So maybe i idle 12 hours a tank and I still can beat 12mpg.i can pretty easily get over 18 mpg on trips.

 

I'm pretty pissed about my mpg.
Same tires, same load, same driving conditions as my 2007.
I was getting 13.7 avg in my 2007 and 14.3 in my 2022.

This little V6 works way too hard in all but perfect conditions.

I feel like I got ripped off.

EPA numbers are for comparison only? Then why is it only Tundra drivers that are sharing how their actual mpg ratings are crap?

 

I'm in the low mpg camp at 14.3, but I have fewer than 500 miles still. It's been very cold, I've been idling a lot, and 85% of my driving is short commutes. Winter gas doesn't help.

Many of us are equally stupefied by guys thinking that a truck shouldn't deliver decent economy in 2023.

Rank insanity to keep expecting/justifying 12-15 mpg out of economy-purposed engineering with vehicles that aren't even utilizing v8 engines anymore. TTV6, deployed air dams, 10 speed automatics, etc, are all reasons to expect 20mpg+ fuel economy.

OP, first order of business, ditch the lift and tires, drive appropriately for economy.

 

Well, I have a 2WD 1794 getting 16 mpg. Have only 2000 miles on it. But ya know what? I don’t care. Every time I walk up to it and hop in the seat I get this big ass smile on my face. It is getting at this time same thing I got in my 4x4 2021 Tacoma so I am good with that. I certainly hope fuel mileage increases over driving time but if not I am good. 11 mpg certainly sucks buddy.

 

You can't put that big of a tire and lift on any vehicle and say it didn't affect the mileage. The increase in drag from the lift and rolling resistance from the tire type and size is definitely going to affect it. You also need to either recalculate your speedo to account for the taller tires as it will throw off your speedo/odometer. The next thing is where you drive as stop n go will kill your mileage vs highway and then how aggressive you drive. I just drove my non hybrid truck over the Cascade Mts (6000 ft pass) 140 miles and back home and was in 4wd for 40 miles and still got 22 mpg but granted speeds were reduced because of the snow/ice/rain to around 50-60 mph. It's a great example of driving at a slower pace where you are not on the gas hard what the truck can do but it boils down to if you have the patience to drive it like that.

 

It seems that for (a lot of?) 3rd gen owners, putting a bigger LT tire has a more substantial impact on MPG than it does for the 5.7 trucks. Maybe the turbos spend a lot more time in boost than before?

I know it's a great truck, and it tows awesome and has a bunch of tech lots of people love, but I totally get that the MPG and payload increases from the previous gen are frustrating for a lot of people.

Staying under the speed limit works wonders for my 5.7 truck. I got over 19 highway last night coming home from hunting.
