Thanks to info shared on an earlier thread about this issue, I was able to reset my fuel gauge by disconnecting from the negative terminal on the truck battery. The first time this happened I had about 2k miles on it. The second time, I had about 3300 miles on the truck. Hopefully, Toyota will come up with a permanent fix for this issue. No other issues to report at this time.

I seem to recall there was a software update to correct this issue. Maybe ask your dealer.

Yeah, mine has been having the same issue and not really accurately depicting how much is left on the tank.

I asked the dealer about this and they said there was an issue with this but not for my vehicle yet. They asked me to bring it in to take a look at it, but I haven’t had time yet and will probably just address it with first oil change if still happening.

I tried the turn it off while still in drive fix but that didn’t do anything. We’ll see… hopefully it gets worked out eventually.

Try disconnecting your negative connection to your battery, let it set for a few minutes and reconnect. I tried this and it worked for me. Hopefully, Toyota will come up with a permanent fix soon.

My Tundra has started to do this as well, even after parking on flat ground. I brought it in to my dealership to have the recalls and a few other issues addressed and they told me they can’t duplicate it and the fuel gauge is “learning” the fuel level. The “learning” excuse is getting old when they try to apply that to anything that isn’t functioning correctly. Absolutely no help at all whatsoever.

Update on fuel gauge issue. I took my truck into the dealer to address recall issues and to have them check out my fuel gauge. They poured a few gallons into the tank and it adjusted accordingly. They concluded there is no issue and sent me on my way. I will continue to monitor and report to Toyota if the problem re-occurs. As mentioned by others, if you have this problem, disconnect the ground on your battery terminal and let it set for a few minutes. I've tried this twice and in both instances the fuel gauge did reset. Good luck!

Toyota is aware but they don’t have the ECU flash ready yet. It’s almost as if the dash gauge gets off and won’t re-learn as mentioned above. The easiest way to reset it is to park level, turn off the engine in D, wait 2 seconds and shift to P. Once in Park watch and the gas gauge will reset. It won’t correct till after you are in park, then turn off the truck.

    Hope that helps

Thanks for the insight. Haven't had an issue with refueling the last couple of times, however, will try your suggestion, should the issue occur again in the future. Thanks again!

I just had the same issue happen to me for the first time with almost 10k on the truck, guess I’ll be adding that to the list. Thankfully it’s all been minor things but they shouldn’t even be an issue

Hope it’s ready sooner rather than later. My dealership really can’t figure out what to do with it. Do you know if that’s likely to be an OTA software update or the ECU is more locked down and will require a dealer trip?

My guess is dealer flash, the dealers get paid for recall fixes

Good question, I can say I never had the issue before they replaced my radio for a screen issue, and now I can’t get the software update to download on the new radio, gps doesn’t work and the clock in the dash and the radio is wrong when set to gps so maybe it’s all connected?

Picked up my truck July 7th. The gauge issue happened to me on 12th. Went direct to Toyota Engineering knowing that if the dealer couldn't duplicate the problem they can't fix it. Just got off the phone with Toyota. Toyota Engineering claims they have no knowledge of this issue, isn't that convenient. You can do a 10 second online search and find it all over the internet.

Reading through other forum posts one takeaway I had was parking on an incline or decline. When my gauge went from 3/4 to full I was parked on an incline.

Pardon my ignorance, but what's there to learn? This is why over-engineering is stupid on some simple things in life.

I filled up my truck one time and had my gauge read at the same level it was before empty for about 20min before it suddenly filled up and read correctly while I was driving down the road. Other than that it's worked fine for me

I have to wonder if the shallow very long fuel tank they designed they won't be able to fix this easily

    lets go yota.

Have 182 miles on the new truck (still on 1st tank of gas). Parked on a hill today with 3/4 of a tank and when I was on my way home I noticed it was full. Glad to see I'm not the only one with this issue. The D fix did work for me but still is reading higher than what it should but the car is literally a few days old so shes still breaking in.

Most definitely! Fuel gauge is a very sophisticated instrument and will sort itself out after many precise calculations of the learning algorithn.

Hmmm. See, I sorta feel differently about the fuel gauge. It should be a very simple measurement tool without any need for “learning.” In my view, it should be a simplistic display based on fuel volume in the tank. The DTE may be calculated and “learn/change”, but the fuel level should be a very simple report.

Here’s the facts, they’re no learning. The fuel level sensor is a float in the end section of a long, narrow, shallow tank. It’s bound to change when parking on a slight slope. But somehow it’s a major problem.

It’s a software glitch, not a learning issue, not an error in tank design. The fuel gauge cluster updates inappropriately reporting a full tank and then corrects itself at a later point randomly or when you do the weird series of steps to “force” it to update the cluster. Toyota is aware but they have to run a crap load of diagnostic tests to confirm the software fix doesn’t affect other aspects of the vehicle. It’s a first year of a new model, I bought my truck knowing these things will happen. Every manufacturer has problems but I’d rather be dealing with Toyota than Dodge when it comes to issues. Drive your truck, enjoy it knowing the 2023’s and beyond won’t have many of these issues thanks to those who report them to Toyota. I’ve had at least 10 people tell me they can’t find one to purchase so be glad you are rolling in style now.

I got this from another thread somewhere on here and it works for me every time. When the gauge shows an incorrect amount of fuel (ie goes back to FULL) I usually get wherever I'm going, then when parking, shut the truck off while still in drive. The truck will of course complain about this, and you'll be in like accessory mode or something like that. Count to 10, then then put it in park and shut it off the rest of the way. Count to 10, then start the truck again and its fixed. I have no idea why it works, but it does.

I just looked it up , it was @PappaDave418 who authored the trick/fix.

“Software”. If this is fixed by a software change, it will be one that just fakes out the range. Most people complain that the tank was slightly less than full and after parking it shows full. The fuel level is at the back of the tank so parking on a slope will cause the fuel to move to the back of the tank and sending the level up. Next time park the other way and watch the fuel gauge show less than before.

The fuel gauge will go back to the right level as you drive on flat roads.

I’m not convinced the “level parking” is the whole story here. Mine reset from 1/2 a tank to full after being parked on completely level ground and never reset itself. It remained inaccurate for ~200 miles until I filled up with fuel based on my trip odometer I always reset after fueling.

It seems like once it gets messed up, it stays like that until you fill up.

I think out of all the issues this one would be up there annoyance wise. I do such a random/mix driving each tank that it would be hard to go off the trip odometer as it wouldn't be consistent from one to the other. Hoping they have this bug figured out before I get my hands on a 2022 (or 2023).
