I'm not convinced. Gas pumps don't all work the same. You didn't even check a full tank. What did your mpg gauge say?

Daaaaaammmmmnnn!!!! The best I can pull (and it's short term like maybe a 200 mile run) is 16mpg. It feels like I'm holding my freaking breath the whole time though... So, it's back to my normal version of driving, and I'm getting 13-14mpg!!!

...and that's how accidents happen! Your brain floats off into its own little world, and the next thing you know your airbags are punching you in the mouth and waking you up from your mind drift.

Seriously though, if driving 70 feels 'very intense and anxious' for you, I'm going to recommend that you just stop driving and seek alternative methods of transportation. You know, for your own peace of mind...

OK, now that you have shown it can be done, PLEASE start driving normally. Accidents are not caused by speeding, but rather by significant differences in speed. If others are flying by you quickly as you travel along at 55 MPH in a 70 MPH zone, YOU are the one who will be causing an accident at some point.

@rruff , both were Sam's club gas stations and I filled up and squirted the same way on both. Here's where my gas needle was when I was almost home. It barely left the F mark. This is with small 26gal tank the tundras came with. There's no mpg gauge, it's work package.

    Screenshot_20220608-075253_Gallery.jpg

@tripleconpanna ,it's a lot of concentration at first, but now it feels like second nature, I even run some music now!

No worries, it's just oil change and tire rotation gauge. I do 10,000 mile oil changes and don't always reset the light after first 5,000miles have passed.

Speed limit is 65, so I don't see how doing 10mph less will cause any major issues. Men doing 20 miles more than limit is when accidents often happen.

Not necessarily. I mean yes, they cause accidents...but there are reasons many states have minimum speed limits. In Georgia I routinely saw Grandma (generalized reference, not my own LOL) get pulled over for going 35/40 in a 65/70.

To be clear, I'm not trying to troll, nor am I upset. Just pointing out that given the normal flow of traffic, it is indeed possible to cause accidents by going too slow. (Granted, the closer people follow proper driving rules, the more likely that risk is mitigated, but still.)

Hang on a minute! Looks like I have an incoming grammar lesson :curls:...

Ok, so it appears the formal definition of 'accident' is: 'an unfortunate incident that happens unexpectedly and unintentionally, typically resulting in damage or injury'... at least it is in an American dictionary. I do believe that would make my use of the word 'accident' appropriate for the context in which is was used. :hattip:

Furthermore if the 'incident' is not accidental, then it would be an intentional act, and we now have a situation where the incident could be deemed as 'vehicular assault', 'assault with a deadly weapon', etc... If the investigation deems the incident to not be 'accidental' then there is a chance insurance may step aside because it exceeds the scope of coverage.

Now, in all fairness, I will agree that the use of the word 'collision' would have also been proper in the context of my post; and the word collision seems to be more universally used in Canada :), especially when describing an 'accident' between two motor vehicles.

So, I do understand why you would be compelled to help keep me from embarrassing myself in the future. But, trust me, I do that enough on my own. Anyhow, time for me to get back to educating someone on why they shouldn't drive 40-45 in a 55-65 zone!!

Controversial opinion: if you’re going too fast to react to someone going slower than you but above the minimum (which is usually 40-45mph on the interstate), you’re going too fast. The catch is, the slower drivers are supposed to be in the right lane.

You’re much less likely to be involved in an accident if you are running with the flow of traffic. If you’re running 10MPH under the limit, you are more likely to get creamed from behind by someone who is constantly switching lanes just to get in front of the next vehicle. Pulling on to a highway from an entrance ramp and not getting up to speed may not cause you to have a wreck, but the vehicles behind you will have to slam on the breaks and that can surely cause an accident, especially if there are tractor trailers behind you.

Well Danny, this is why I try to pay attention to my surroundings. Today, going to work, I had semi behind me and there was another one trying to merge. Obviously, to avoid problems, I accelerated to give them some room for a safe merge.

That is the problem of the person driving too fast, not the person driving within legal limits to get ahead. I absolutely can not stand people who weave in and out, shoot gaps that are 6" longer than their vehicle, pass people on the shoulder, etc. Those people are the problem. Not the slow guy minding his own business driving a legal speed in the right lane. (Emphasis on the last four words)

And guess who's fault it is when someone slams into the vehicle in front of them?

Hate to burst the bubble but if you really wanna be accurate you have to use the same pump at the same station each time or the comparison isn’t accurate. I’d guess your sams club pump shut off early. In my ford I fill up until I can see the fuel in the fill neck, so it doesn’t matter what station or pump I use. In the Toyota I just let it shut off. I measure mpg for fun, not my mission in life. I’m at 14mpg. It is what it is.

Yep you're generally responsible for what happens in front of you in your field of vision. I'd love to see some super aggressive driver complaining to the cop who showed up to the scene of the accident say, "he was going too slow!" after he rear ended someone.

While I 100% agree with you technically, it's more of a matter of, "Would you rather be right, or avoid accidents?" It is exactly the same principle used when teaching kids how to safely cross the street. They can do everything legal, and pedestrians have the right of way, but the question then becomes, "Would you rather be right and dead, or submit the right of way and be alive?" It is exactly the same concept.

You are asking for more greatness from me when I've nearly exhausted all my powers! Look here, 170miles on trip meter and barely left first quarter!! This is small 26gal tank our tundras came with in 2010.
    Screenshot_20220608-154252_Gallery.jpg

When I fill up, I let her do her thing and when she clicks, I let her settle in for a few seconds, to let all bubbles settle and finish off with one squirt. No more. Besides, it adds like half a cup of coffee, not even 40 cents worth..

I agree on overfilling. Makes me cringe when someone forces it twenty times and my hose is throbbing like mad!

I don’t think that analogy applies. Yes, when crossing a public street (not a highway) with a pedestrian crosswalk, you should make sure drivers notice you and slow down before you cross, even if you have the right-of-way.

But that doesn’t mean that as a fellow driver on an interstate, you need to speed (i.e., break the law) in order to avoid accidents. The selfish idiot children doing 15 over or more, racing each other, weaving in and out, shooting gaps like they’re playing GTA are breaking the law. I don’t need to also break the law in order to avoid an accident. Those fools need to stop acting like the precious few minutes they save driving like lunatics are worth more than everyone else’s lives on the road. There are way too many dashcam videos of these fools causing accidents because they simply must pass every single other driver.

Now I sound about twice my age, lol.

My commute has a ~12 mile stretch of highway that ends at a traffic light. I just laugh when I get to the light and all the guys who had to pass me because I was only driving the speed limit are sitting there.

I think we've stumbled inadvertently into a new and wonderful type of thread!

The "How I prefer the strangers surrounding me (and on the interwebz) to drive their vehicles" family of threads.

No chance for a resolution. All of the opinions. And some twisted panties.

This could be better than the "best motor oil" AND "regular vs. High-test" threads!!!

Again, I think we are closer to the same opinion than you might think. I wasn't trying to say to match the speed of those kids. But when the vast majority of the traffic flow is 5-10 above the limit, with a few trying to go even faster, driving 10 or more below the limit is going to create more of an opportunity for an accident/collision. I generally drive the speed limit these days (much to my daughter's chagrin) and even I get frustrated by those who are not even matching the speed limit at times, especially when one is passing the other at a barely perceptible difference in speed.
