Android controls missing with Bluetooth

This is probably more of android question, but I figure someone here knows. I have a non-JBL stereo with my Android phone connected via bluetooth. The controls for 'browse' and shuffle are missing, however. When my wife connects her phone, the controls are present. My phone is newer than hers. Any idea why the controls are missing? i can play music and make calls, just reduced functionality.
