Driving 70 mph with my 2012 Tundra. Engine shut off. Felt like it ran out of gas. After sitting 5 minutes it started and ran fine. Happened twice now. And, yes it has a full tank. Any ideas?

Would also help if the OP would confirm which engine he has.

Engine is a 4.6 L. No lights came on. Temperature gauge and all other gauges fine. Nothing recorded by computer.

Anyone else feel like this sounds like a vapor lock issue? I mean it shouldn't be because.its largely a thing of the past with modern vehicles buttttt

    It's good
It wasn't an instant shutdown? More like a fairly quick death? Fuel filter perhaps.

Fuel Filter or fuel pump are suspicious.

It would take some learning but I think Toyota's Techstream can monitor the fuel pressure. If so you could set up a laptop to log the data so the next time it cuts out you can see if it's a fuel delivery problem.

It stopped on me three more times today. Takes about 5 minutes till it starts and keeps running. I'm guessing fuel pump, Fuel filter or fuel pump module. Will change the filter tomorrow. I hate to be a replace it guy. Would rather it broke completely so it can be diagnosed.

The filter is part of the fuel pump assembly and isn't replaceable, it's supposedly a "lifetime" filter. You have to replace the entire fuel pump assembly. Or go with a kit that replaces just the pump and bypasses the internal filter, and add an external filter. URD makes a kit. It's been working great for me for 40k+ miles, and cheaper than a new whole new assembly

A previous car I had did this, it was about 10 years old and had about 100K miles on it. Be running just fine and the engine would just die. If I immediately tried to start it, it would crank but not fire. Let it sit there for a few minutes and then it'd fire back up and run fine for weeks. Then it started happening more frequently till it would barely run more than a minute. Replaced the fuel pump and problem solved.

Happened to my 4runner once, issue starting in the morning and by the end of the day I was stranded at school for the fuel pump :D URD kit is the way to go and a easy swap, though kind of a shame to prematurely replace a part like that but flip side is you could end up totally stranded somewhere, and it does sound like a pump issue imo

I vote for a datalogger or gauge on the fuel rail. A dying pump could be trying but just not able to make the cut here and there.

If you had a datalogger going you could see the inconsistent fuel pressure/fuel deliverly to confirm the problem.

Several years ago in college and stressed during final exams, I ran my old 2007 5.7 Tundra out of gas on the highway heading to class. One seconds everything was fine, the next fell complelty on its face dead.
