What have you done to your 1st gen Tundra today?

Yea its kinda hard to explain cuz there are alot of forks. Its at like the first fork after you finish all the climbing and there is a sign on the right. The seasonal lake is called Coyote Lake.

i researched a lot of the aluminum ones and a lot have been made too wide. The ones I posted fit great, with no modifications.
I also lost the little metal dowel. Popped it out and it hit the ground and into the grass somewhere. I was on my hands and knees for 30+ minutes looking like a tweaker
Thank god I found it.

 

Replaced oil pressure sender.

Noticed a couple other projects when you're not busy

1st Instrument cluster pic....possible seat belt issue, wiper fluid, check eng., No Gear selection indicator
2nd Instrument cluster pic.....20MPH @2000RPM's....wow

 

Projects:
1) No airbag. Caused by a botched shifter linkage repair. Shifter repair went well actually, but when reattaching srs, some pins/tabs got bent. Sourcing a replacement at the moment.
2) Wiper fluid refilled. Had to order special fluid from Japan.
3) Check engine = one intermittent bad coil that will eventually become a permanent bad coil. Sourcing replacement...
4) "D" gear selector bulb is burnt out.
5) I think the RPM photo was taking while accelerating. She runs pretty good.
6) The frame..... Funny thing the frame was replaced by the recall, so its ok, but they decided to throw everything else that was rotten back on to the frame.

 

10 minute fix...swap D bulb with L bulb

 

Got my fog lights working today
I’ve had the lenses installed for over a year and couldn’t find the oval switch for the life of me.
Finally Found one from a scrap yard and installed it.
Only to find out it wasn’t working with my LED headlights.
Thanks to NickB_01TRD he helped me out and let me know LEDs can be tricky with fog lights.
I decided to put back my halogens and they worked instantly.

Recently made a bed cage for the RTT. Realized hadn’t shared and I’m fairly proud of it so I’m showing it off now.

Wanted an old school look, 100% visibility out the back, full access to the bed from all sides and used aluminum to keep the weight down. Came out to be everything I wanted. Buddy welded it and it’s held up well over past few off-road(rough trails!) adventures.



Still has some work left. Planning a thin storage area at the top/right below RTT which will hold a table(I stole this idea from my brother in law/Giving him his due)

And supports at each corner just to be on the safe side.


Oh, no wind noise and still averaging around 19MPG in the freeway. Made the frame to sit behind the cab and the RTT to sit as close to cab roof as possible. Sits about 3/4” above rear of cab and 1/4” above middle of cab.

 

I would add those gussets to the upper corners as well, help keep everything nice and tight

 

Looks good! Going to keep it bare or paint it eventually?

Paint eventually but planning a color close to what it is now. Want to match skid plate, sliders, front of roof rack and the bed cage to…



And YES 19MPG! I’m averaging a little over 8mpg city and over 19 freeway.

This is about 10mins after climbing major elevation from LA through the 14freeway.



When I stopped at a rest area I was over 18 while fully loaded and mostly uphill. On the way back(didn’t take a pic) I was over 20mpg.

 

Dang that's crazy. I'd love to get that good of mileage. How many miles are you able to go before needing to fill up?

 

Lol. I’m new to working with metal. This is actually my 1st real project involving metal. Welder buddy wants these beveled more. Alb1K works with metal how I work with wood. Dude made his stereo case with metal lol.

 

Especially turning ~2600RPM's @ 80MPH

 

Not really sure as I fill up around 1/4 tank typically which is around 14gallons but this is how much is left after 300+ freeway miles and some city driving.


I honestly don’t understand what is happening but I’m happy. I don’t drive much in the city so 8mpg city doesn’t faze me. I’m extremely happy with my freeway MPGs!

I have dirty deeds 12holes injectors, JBA shorty headers, JBA Ypipe, gibson exhaust and new O2 sensors. The biggest change came after the sensors. My city mpg dropped big time! So much so I was worried, even posted about it but after the 1st long trip I was happy. Have more power and amazing MPG. Oh, also have Nitro 4.56 gears which I’m sure help and they seem to go very well with the 33’s.

I’ve mentioned this before and I feel it’s worth mentioning again, over 80mph my truck flys! I can barely touch the pedal or else I’m 90+. I literally have to take my foot off the pedal just to stay below 80.

 

Ya that’s the sweet spot. If you look at current MPG it’s over 21mpg. 17.8 is average after a MAJOR climb in elevation. If anyone is in the LA area they know the 5/14 climb.

Somewhat, I think that’s Kern county which is after the climb. Kern is one of my favorite fishing spots… or at least the closest to me I consider “away” from LA

 

Maybe if you keep the RPMs up by keeping it outta overdrive in the city, you'll get better MPGs? I'd try it. lol

It's like your truck is more at home in the higher RPM range.

 

I drive like a grandpa in the city, never get to OD and the scan gauge has shown me my MPG is terrible at low RPM & slow speeds. When I say 8mpg, I’m not joking. It’s terrible!

 

Plenty of miles and smiles per gallon, I like it.

 

Couldn’t of done it without you all. Some YouTube but mainly you all. Haven’t talked about what’s taken place over the past few years but I will say I’m smiling and I can honestly say I couldn’t of built my truck without you all. Appreciate my Tundra fam!
