Hey I have a ticking noise as well...always during colder startup's but goes away in like 10-15 seconds if not sooner. Also get a slight hint of it during hotter months during overnight startup's but maybe only for a 2-4 seconds or so.. also my car is at a slight incline so not sure if that makes a difference or not.. I think its the vvt lifters not getting oil and stick slightly..but please let me know if this is a serious issue or just needs a different oil change.

Also I may be a tad lower in oil when I did my oil change.. I only added 7.5 qts iirc.. and I hear that we should be adding up to 8.5 qts to this engine.. I'll add the oild and see if that makes a difference.

I have a 17 tundra, and was having the same tapping. Was running the high-milage motor oil since truck is over 90k. Switched to toyota oil, and it solved the tap.

Thanks for the insight into the fix! Found it here!

So would'nt this not actually cause more damage than good to the engine that does not have any leaks? by expanding the oil seals unnecessarily?? I mean the real cause of the ticking is something similar but this would be causing more harm no? Maybe I am getting this info incorrect... but would be good to know by someone who is more familiar with these types of products.

Sounds like lifter to me. I just had my 2018 limited 96K miles checked yesterday and mechanic confirmed its a lifter.

I also wondered about adding it to an engine that does not leak motor oil - hmmm.
