would you just sand the painted part and weld then repaint that portion ?

 

Yep. You just would sand down the area down to bare metal for a clean weld surface, weld it on , then prime and paint again

 

I like it better with bull bar but maybe its just me. the good thing is that you are the one welding so easy to add on later. Me I have no welding skill

I learned to weld in high school agricultural metal trades. Then when I was 21 I became an ironworker working for my buddies dad and that when I REALLY learned. Welding buildings together and supports for concrete wall panels and edge angle for concrete floors, ceiling joist bridging...... it's a bit different than welding a trailer together in a shop lol

 

Another reason I left the bar off was that I needed to get finished and back on my truck , as I need to get back to remodeling projects on the house bc in laws are coming Wed lol

 

I kind of have a unique skill set. I was an ironworker at 2 different times in life, 21 , and 31. I've also been a police officer, home builder and for the past 16 years (minus one of ironworking again in the middle there ) I've been in banking lol I got smart the second time ironworking though, I didn't sell my tools and harnesses this time , for that just in case moment lol

 

Thankfully I didn’t have to deal with power steering lines, my biggest issue was the base plate across the frame rails didn’t match up to my frame holes. And that base plate is the foundation for the rest that needs to be nats ass close. I’m not a structural welder nor a professional fabricator but I’ve been around a lot of stuff; like they don’t specify how far to overlap seam gaps, but I left the biggest valley outwards to fill with weld material. Getting all those pieces to line up perfect on their faces is the key to the best final product. We didn’t weld the inside seam because he’s a good welder. It did warp a hair across the long edge, but nothing I was to concerned about I lost my phone in the lake so I lost all my fab pics

What is the solution to fitting the winch? That's the same setup I was thinking abut going with.

Basically you need to either fabricate something to make the oem one work, which I wouldn't bother with or go aftermarket

 

More specifically it needs to be up higher 2- 3 inches in order to clear the winch. By going aftermarket you can eliminate the issue by mounting wherever you want and not being limited to the hard line bends in the oem cooler dictating where you have to put it.

 

Once the cooler is moved does the winch fit OK?

 

Yes it would fit fine if the cooler was somewhere else.

 

Nice to see another diy bumper kit. Rough country got rid of theirs. Luckily I was able to get it shortly after it came out. When I built my bumper I got it Line X'ed in their premium liner, it's UV resistant and has held up great, hasn't faded at all. Think it cost 300 bucks. Worth every penny!

 

I thought about that but this will be offroaded in moab and other areas in northern Utah. It's going to get trail rash, and I've seen linex be scraped off of sliders before like skinning a potato. I chose the route I did for the ease and expense of fixing the inevitable trail rash. When it gets messed up I can just mask off and respray. Will be doing the same with my sliders once I get them

 

I definitely wouldn't line x sliders or skids, but bumpers seem to get green light for line x in most applications. Post up pics of your trail runs! I always enjoy seeing them

 

Your chunky thumb is holding a Deutsch DT connector on the left. Unsure of what the OEMs are. If it were me, I'd cut the OEM off and match the light. iWiss makes an affordable, off-branded crimper for solid pins. I keep a bunch of DTM, DT, and DTP housings for all sorts of projects. Fantastic connectors which are reusable (except for the pins).

 

Lol @ "your chunky thumb" I will prob do that depending on what coastal says. Supposedly they are to be plug and play with the factory harness which I would prefer, but if not I may go that route.

 

Oh BTW sumo , I have a complete dobinsons kit waiting to go on, I just remembered you have a dobinsons leaf pack. It's all in the bed of my truck right now

 

Oh yeahhhhhh!! the leaf springs are pretty stiff at first, but they broke in after towing some heavy stuff, they'll definitely give you some rake, I believe it lifts it more than it says.

You got the poly bushings, greaseable pins and shackles to go with it? (If so, make sure they take grease easily before installation, I had to swap my zerks out for better ones)

BTW I use Superlube NGLI2 for greasing it. Seems to work well and is available at most hardware stores.

I used a floor jack, bottle jack, and pry bars to get everything installed.

 

I'm not actually installing myself this time. There's a guy in slc at agility customs, he's called "the yota guy" on fb lol he pretty much works exclusively on custom offroad toyotas. I'm having him do it, because I usually do my own work for leisure but I have a timeline for a utah colorado trip coming up and need to get it installed and do a shake down before I go

Ty to sumo, I didn't realize these were plug in adapters to the oem hookup at first. I was able to find these same ones at caliraisedled for 14 bucks. Ty sir

Also heard back from coastal, this is how the hookup was intended to be, they just do a poor job of explaining that on the website.

 

So I got the new ps cooler, anyone see any issues I'm not seeing from mounting it right here? It will clear the grille there

 

Looks good to me. I can't see where there would be any interference with anything.

Great job and nice writeup. Good to know the details regarding the winch, i just picked up in Engo 10k. Hope it fits. A guy I know is running a Badlands Apex 12k in his Coastal bumper without any clearance issues with the PS cooler.

I vote you add the bullbar though, I was really happy I added it to mine.
