Is the TRD skid plate worth it just for oil changes?

I just did my first oil change on my 2019 TRD off road tundra. It is ashame toyota did not put in a access hole.

Is it a worth buying the TRD plate just to make oil changes a little easier? My only concern is oil puddling up on the skid plate.

I have thought about just leaving off the skid plate as i do not really go off road, if i do it's very rare but i plan to keep the truck for many years.

Have to figure if your time is worth it, is the 10 minutes you fiddle with the plate worth the cost of a TRD or RCI skid?

One thing's for sure - have a skid plate on there, even if the truck turns into a pavement princess. I decided to bounce a turkey on the highway off a skid plate once and the dent it put in the skid plate made me damn glad I had it on here and it wasn't something mechanical that took the bird.

IMO the RCI is a much better looking skid plate. I would not run without one though....too much road debris. Pair a skid plate up with the MotivX tool kit and Fumoto drain valve and it will be the cleanest oil change ever.

This is the engine skid by itself. They also have a transmission skid and an addon "winglet" set for catalytic convertor protection from theft. If you currently do not have any protection for yours cats, I would highly recommend that as a priority.

Nice! I do worry about the catalytic convertors and gas prices :spending:

    Short answer OP yes…

An access door makes changing the oil significantly easier and quicker. And as @Tundra234 stated, an RCI skid plate is better looking. I have the aluminum version and my truck is an absolute pavement princess. Worth every nickel for the oil change simplicity.

Mine is powder coated in black but I do believe they have a “raw” aluminum version…

Is the aluminum really as strong as the 10 ga steel.

I have the powdercoated aluminum and it's pretty solid. Many of us here have the aluminum.

I’m getting too old to mess with taking off a skid plate every oil change hence I have the RCI skid plate.

I bought the RCI plate after the third oil change. In that time, I decided to keep this truck long term, so it was a good reason to buy one.

I would say yes. And I would consider metal over aluminum because better protection and price although heavier but come on, I have the V8

If you don't want to buy a different skid plate just cut a hole in the OEM and make a door or plate. This is what i did. There are threads on the subject.

    You just wait
The aluminum definitely is strong. I used it to jack both front wheels up at the same time to put it on jackstands. Obviously do at your own risk but besides some nicks in the aluminum from the jack head it was completely fine.

I sold my OEM plate off my '21 on here for $100 and bought the RCI metal engine skid. Aluminum option was more $ and the minor added weight doesn't bother me. Install wasn't bad, second set of hands would've been helpful, just used a floor jack for that.

x2. Run the exact same setup. Looking forward to my 10k change, 5k change was a little less than exciting- oem skid plate got in the way and I forgot to remove the red plug from my oil drain pan, got distracted for 4 minutes while draining and came back to a floor full of oil :anonymous:

Get a plate. Aluminum or steel. Both have their merit. Then get the MotivX and the Fumoto. Sell or trash the paper thin original skid plate. You will be glad for the extra protection and ease of oil changes.
