Popping noise when turning - fixed!

    I wanted to share with everyone the success I had fixing this common problem with first gen Tundras. Like many people, I've been chasing this problem with new steering rack bushings, sway bar bushings, new transmission mount, etc. Some of those repairs seemed to help for a while, but the problem eventually returned. I found a recommendation on this website to try replacing the leaf spring shims using Dorman parts available on Amazon (search for "
    $13 Dorman 924-070 Rear Leaf Spring Insert Compatible with Select Models, 4 Pack
    Dorman 924-070 Rear Leaf Spring Insert"). Some of my existing shims were missing, and others were very worn. All of them were bone dry and the leafs rusty.

    After replacing the shims and greasing the top of the shims, this problem is 100% resolved. I just drove around town for an hour hitting every turn and parking lot ramp that would always trigger a loud popping our pounding sound, and its gone - completely! These shims are less than $10, and the cost of grease is negligible, so I highly recommend doing this repair before chasing more expensive components. Get yourself a needle nose fitting for your grease gun, it makes greasing inbetween the spring leafs a piece of cake. Perhaps greasing the shims should be a periodic maintenance item.

    Awesome, I'll do this if plan A of "spray the crap out of them with motorcycle chain lube" doesn't work. The dirt roads this past weekend were both muddy and dusty and I think it was my leafs that sounded like squeaky hinges when I got home.

    Your profile lists a lot about your truck but not whether 2WD/4WD. If 4WD, failure to grease the slip yolk (and everything else) on the drive line will also cause that. You're in an '04, so I don't think you're impacted by this, but '05-'06 owners have a TSB on clunks also.

    I had a clunk on my 2000 AC with 250k when I would turn into my driveway, eventually found the transmission mount rubber had ripped, bought one off Rock Auto, it was a fun and rewarding repair
