Waiting for my Platinum Tundra to arrive at a dealer a couple hours north of me in Washington state. However, I am moving to Idaho in a month or so. Is it possible to get the dealer to charge Idaho sales tax, since that is what I would owe when I register the vehicle there? For what it's worth, I already have a house in Idaho, though still have my WA driver's license.

I bought my Sequoia from an Autonation in Texas last year, it was shipped to Phoenix & I paid 4xx.xx tax to Texas.

Sales tax is charged based on where you will title the vehicle. Some states are required to charge other states sales tax while others will not. If you deal turns into a far away out of state deal, the dealer may attempt to charge you more for the truck or elect not to sell it to you at all. If you are paying cash than you have the choice(if your state doesn't require it) on paying those taxes and fees.

Each state has requirements for titling vehicles. Some states will require their title work to include their states license or their states insurance. E.i. your Washington license might not work for Idaho titling. There are a lot of moving variables for your situation, you would want to make sure that every detail is ironed out, worst case scenario is that your truck is in "title lombo" leaving you without a plate/temp tag to drive on.

also look into if you pay taxes in one state if the new state will honor what was already paid in case they charge more.

usually if you buy a toyota in a regional port and you transfer to another state in the same regional port, usually you will not incur a out of region surcharge.

Unfortunately, the dealer will charge you sales tax for a PURCHASE based on the location of the DEALER unless you can prove current out of state residency and title the vehicle in that state.

If you LEASE the vehicle, you are charged sales tax on each payment based on the GARAGE address where the vehicle is being kept.

A dealer will not allow you to buy a vehicle without paying sales tax for their address without you proving current out of state residency. Most likely they will ask to verify via 2 bills with an Idaho address or provide an Idaho ID/DL. If you've already got a house there you'll just need 2 different utility bills or bank statements that were addressed to you at that address and let the dealer know you will be titling and registering it in Idaho. Just tell them you live at your Idaho address and you should be able to make that work.

I don’t know exactly for your state or situation but I’ve purchased out of state before and can tell you what happened to me buying in Georgia and registering in Alabama.

I purchased a used backup vehicle with 30k miles several years ago in Atlanta Georgia. Cannot remember purchase price not total tax or percentage. I do remember that when I took my paperwork into our local probate office for tags, they informed me I was overcharged for the taxes. This wasn’t a cut and dry situation as I then had to contact the dealership I purchased from and they eventually issued me a refund in the mail.
