I wanted to share my experience getting used to using the hitch-mounted bike rack from 1Up with the 3rd gen Tundra.

I'm using the 2-place, Heavy Duty model, https://www.1up-usa.com/product/2in-heavy-duty-double-bike-rack/ - but I imagine this will be applicable for other hitch racks too.

    upload_2022-5-15_17-55-56.jpg

The rack width is narrower than the bed width.

When folded up, it's only another foot or so behind the tailgate.

    upload_2022-5-15_18-30-0.jpg

My mountain bike ends up being a few inches wider than the rack on both ends. Not a huge overhang.
    upload_2022-5-15_18-32-48.jpg

Note, though, that the backup cameras freak out about the width of the rack edges, to the extent that it projects the width being about 2x the bed width. Check out the right half of this view.

    upload_2022-5-15_17-57-50.jpg

    Overhead view is similarly wonky.
    upload_2022-5-15_17-58-43.jpg

Backup path lines are OK though.
    upload_2022-5-15_18-30-44.jpg

With a bike loaded, and use your actual eyes and common sense. And the bike is in the path of the sensor so you basically just have to ignore the continuous backup warning beeping.

On the bonus side though, the rack provides space for more stickers as well as the excellent, optional, bottle cap opener.
    upload_2022-5-15_18-40-21.jpg

Hope this helps those who wanted to see how the cameras and hitch racks work together.

Thank you, this is very helpful to me. Though, is there a chance we could get a pic of camera view with the bike loaded? No worries if not, as this does answer some questions ive been pondering.

Looks great! I think I'm going to go with that rack if I can convince the minister of finance....

I use a similar rack and even with the parking sensors completely off, it slams on the brakes every time I throw it into reverse. Think I'm gonna have to ditch it for a frame pad or something instead

Here are two views. Overhead view, and then the view beginning to reverse. Does this get you the info you need?

Interesting - I didn't have this problem yesterday, but today when I threw the bike on and backed up in my driveway for the above pictures, I did.. intermittently. I wonder if having that dotted green line clear, which I can do by adjusting the fore/back position of the bike on the rack, is the trick.

I'll do some more experimenting and will reply back.

It seems to force the vehicle to stop when I initially accelerate in reverse when it senses an object. Once it does the initial stop though, I can start backing up again and has no issues.

In my very limited goofing around with it, if I cover the brake lightly, it seems to let me back up. But yeah, if this is gonna be a problem, then a tailgate frame pad is the better solution, though I love the security of this rack.

Those racks are the gold standard! I have the Yakima DrTray and it's pretty good, but I would've got a OneUp had I known of them at the time.

How does it lock the bikes up? Mine has a cable that extends out and locks to the rack. Nothing a pair of bolt cutters couldn't make short work of

I use this - it's a quick process, key matched to the hitch lock. They also have cable locks and chain locks, but I'm pretty confident with these for the length of time my bikes are on the rack.

You have to turn off the parking sensors and collision avoidance. It would be nice if we could just turn off the rear but I don’t think it’s possible. Also even when you start driving you could get the error message to clean your rear sensors every 30 seconds or so and you manually have to hit the back button to close it. It’s a pain and I really wish I could use my front sensors at least with the bike rack on.

edit: you don’t have to turn off rcta at least. It will still work

I have been using that exact 1UP rack since day one. It is nice because I can slide it in close to the bumper and, when it is in the up position, it does not affect the backup sensors in the bumper or the backup camera.

I turn off the automatic backup braking (button below steering wheel) when I have the rack down and a bike on it. Doesn't affect my front sensors and I don't get any error messages regarding cleaning sensors*. I do forget occasionally but it sure reminds me when it slams on the brakes.

*This is on a '22 Limited with only the rear camera.

Which button below the steering wheel are you referring to? Could you snap a pic?

Looks like a car (not a truck???) backing over a cone...

I have been trying to decide between the 1up rack and the recon rack. While im still not 100% sure this certainly gives me more info than i had before to help with the decision, and I thank you very much for your time.

I need space for 2 bikes for a planned long road trip. Im assuming that the recon may give better visibility in the camera view, but that does not appear unusable with the 1up rack. Hmmm, decisions, decisions.

I don't know the recon at all, but this double rack as well as a single rack add-on me and I can carry three fairly heavyweight bikes super solidly and folds out of the way pretty nifty.

I really like this one and have no complaints at all.

Thanks for the write-up on your 1UP! I have a Thule T2 hitch rack that i used on my previous 2007 Tundra with no issues. I thought I could use it with my new 2022 Tundra, but I am having issues. Every time I use it, I get all kinds of alerts and when I back up I get an instant brake. I have not found a way to turn off all the alerts ( annoying seeing 4 yellow lights on your dash while driving down the freeway) and thanks to one of the posts earlier I may be able to turn the braking off. Anyone have issues with the alerts as I do? If not, Imay be throwing out the Thule and getting a 1UP...

    Any advice?

Hey I apologize for bringing up an old thread… with your 1up rack on the tundra (without a hitch extender)… are you able to open your tailgate when the rack is in the flat position or tilted down away from the truck when there are NO bikes on the rack?

This braking and beeping when backing up with a trailer (or apparently a bike rack in this case) is one of the most ANNOYING and CONFUSING things to get working right. The first time I backed our travel travel I was so frustrated I was about 30 seconds from selling this dang truck. Anyway, you have to turn off the button below the steering wheel as shown in the picture by BikeAR in post #14 AND you have to go into the dash menu system and turn off the "Intuitive Parking Assist Function" ("intuitive?! ha, right, not!!!!) It is NOT indicated with an acronym in the menu but a "P" with a few radio waves pointing at a cone. It's very similar to the symbol used on the hard button below the dash, but doesn't have the "car" symbol on it. If both are not OFF then you can't back up without it beeping and slamming on the brakes. Why one is a hard button and the other is a soft button in a menu system I can't answer, but I repeat BOTH have to be OFF.

Toyota, I was an engineer working on automotive ADAS systems before retiring and I'll give my feedback on behalf of MANY that have struggled with this that you really muffed on the User Interface on this one. I was hassling with this once again today, backing up with trailer, and to make it worse, due to colder weather my tires have 35 PSI instead of the needed 36 so the "Adjust Pressure" warning symbol comes back up after clearing it every 2 seconds and covers up the system menus even right when I was trying to find the dang setting to allow me to back my trailer. Argh was I pissed at you today!!!! What are your engineers thinking?

I can understand that the truck won't know when a bike rack is plugged in, but it DOES know when a trailer is plugged and and selected in the trailer settings, so the 2 settings to allow backing up should both be automatically disabled. You should assume the driver will want to go into reverse, wouldn't you think? And, someone with a bike rack should be able to create a "Trailer" setting for that, and when enabled it too should disable the settings that prevent backing in reverse. Please improve this with a firmware fix and you won't have so many people cursing you!

I have a Thule (holds four bikes) with the hitch extender. I can open my bed flat without any contact. Without the hitch extender is touches slightly.

Sorry, JMarkel9. I am way late on the response here, but maybe it can help someone else. The tailgate can be lowered fully when no bikes are on the rack. No need to lower the rack. It is close, but does not touch. This is a two-bike (non-HD) 1Up rack pushed almost all the way into the receiver.
