'20 Pro vs. '22 Limited? They are the same price!

I'm sure I'm not the only one with this dilemma....

For about $60k I can get a well optioned '22 Limited or a slightly used '20 Pro.

I currently have a '20 TRD Sport which has worked great but I like the look of the Pro + the interior (leather, heated seats, sunroof).

The '22 has a better interior, larger screen, more tech, etc. etc. etc. + more warranty.

One other consideration is back seat space. The 2.5 gen is like a limo...the 3rd gen is decent but felt smaller when I sat in it at the dealer.

Lastly, going with the 2.5 gen means I can keep my Bed Rug and ARE cap (assuming I get the same color of course).

Appreciate anyone here who has gone through similar mental gymnastics!

    I currently have a 22 Limited 4x4.
Even though I like the looks of the Pro more I would probably go with the 22 Limited 4x4 if the same price.
If not in a huge rush, I would wait and take a look at the 2023 trucks.
If needing one now, I would probably go with the 2022.

There is not a right answer to this question. I love my 2.5 but can also appreciate the 3.
What would tip me over is the Pro suspension. It is amazing. Go drive the Pro back to back with your Sport. The ride is SMOOTH. The damping is better than any truck I have driven. As the bumps get bigger, the bigger the smile on my face gets. You will not get that in the 3 unless you get a Pro.

I looked at used vehicles for like 2 seconds and moved to new. The price drop that’s going to happen once the car market normalizes is going to be massive. Used especially.

Re-upping your financing and trading in your ‘20 to a one- or two-year-newer Tundra makes absolutely zero sense to me. I don’t know if you actually have FU money or just act like it, but snap out of it and step back from the ledge, lol. There is such little difference between the trims on a 2nd gen.

Also agreed that we’re headed toward a market correction that you might want to hang onto your pennies to take some small advantage of when the time comes.

Lastly, I’m firmly in the 2nd gen camp at this point (or 2.5 if you must), but I would not overpay for what is essentially a bed stamp. And right now, you WILL overpay on a 19-21 Pro.

All good points. I'm on a lease that is due soon which is why I'm having to make a call now. Ideally I would ride it out as long as I can as I agree the used market is very over priced and Pro's are even more so.

It is. I have ~$5k in equity which would go towards whatever I decide. Not quite FU money of course but something

Yes you are going to over pay a bit (for any truck) but you will have some equity to offset. Sounds like you like your current Gen 2.5 and I wouldn’t buy a Gen 3 until about 2024 or 2025 as there are still some bugs to work out. That said, the ‘20-‘21 Gen 2.5s are Tundras that have been perfected over all the years of that version and the Pro is the greatest expression of that perfection. Love mine and still has plenty of tech and power compared to the newer Tundra and gas mileage is negligible as well with what I’ve seen on YouTube (I get 15.5mpg on the stock Michelins) The Fox suspension and dual exhaust are what really separate the TRD Pro from your TRD Sport - that combined with the bullet proof engine and enough tech (push button/keyless entry shark fin antenna Apple CarPlay etc) would push me toward the ‘20-‘21 Pro over any Gen 3 at this point… good luck!!

At $4/gal, you save less than $80/month. For thousands out of pocket, that will take a *really* long time to make up

We really do like the 2.5 Gen. Our other car is a Tesla Model Y so even the Tech in the 3rd Gen really doesn’t compare to that. The room in the back seat for kid and dogs is unlike any other vehicle on the market (correct me if I’m wrong).

I may buy the lease on the Sport and hold it for a while. It only has 15k miles in 2 years (work from home now) and won’t go up that much.

Here's your decision tree based on what I think is important. What you think is important will differ.

    Seems simple to me...

If you want techy $hit, go with the '22. But as previously stated try to hold off for next years model so these bugs can get sorted out!

If you want a reliable, capable and proven truck that also doesn't look like a GM product then go w/the '20 Pro. The suspension on these things is underrated. If you haven't seen it, search for the video of a guy running a stock '19 Pro through Hell's Gate (no mods stock suspension, stock tires, etc...)!!! I think the below link shows clips from his border to border run w/this truck.

Okay. After watching that - get the Pro!!!!

PS I might just keep my stock Michelins now…

There's a great video of a guy taking a stock F-250 up Hell's Gate & the Devil's Escalator in MOAB. It's kind of a challenge with a lot of drivers to see if they can take their stock trucks up there. Pretty cool stuff.

That’s a 2015, I believe. Wasn’t that the year of the Inferno TRD Pro? :monocle:

    2015 — inferno?
    2016 — quicksand?
    2017 — cement?
    2019 — voodoo blue
    2020 — army green

I've had great service from my stock Michelins (that's all I ran on my 08, and my Pro is only at 3,000 miles so it'll have them for at least a while). The only compliant I've had w/them is appearance and use in mud, but I don't expect them to perform well in mud. I agree that the truck looks better w/some 295s wrapped around those stock BBSs.... But, I wonder how much articulation of that suspension is lost w/the larger tires (unless you are doing a full suspension replacement).

To me, this generation of Tundra Pro ('19-'21s), was built and designed by the engineers to do some pretty amazing things right out of the box. Yes, it can be improved on; we can always add more clearance; we can always lift the truck; we can always add bigger tires and wheels... But, for most of us, the stock Pro exceeds the capabilities and needs in terms of on-road, desert, and off-road use.

This is my hang-up w/the Gen3s. Even according to the engineers, they thoughtfulness in terms of design was focused on comforts and tech stuff. But, there is no bragging or showing off of the capabilities... Just that they improved tech and redesigned the cabin. So far, I have yet to see (even on this forum) anyone bragging about what their Gen3 is able to do in terms of off-road performance.

Well crap!!! I think you are right; that is a 2015! The video is 6 years old (no way it could be a 2019). Well, now I'm going to have to drive my '21 to Utah and make sure my truck is just as capable. Although, I'm not sure I have the skill or experience to do what that guy is doing w/the truck (at least w/o a good spotter)....:hattip:

Inferno was the special color in ‘15 but maybe it was offered in ‘19 as well? Unless that dude was at the factory 4yrs prior to when he thought he was there!!

Interesting you have a 19 Pro

There is one for sale in MA…$44k with 102k miles. 1-owner. Looks clean.

That would be close to an even trade with my Sport….
