87 octane or premium fuel

My salesman told me to use premium fuel in the 2022 tundra and knowing it has a turbo I assumed so. I've read a couple magazine articles saying the engine was tuned for 87 octane....what are you filling up with?

....I find salesmen know very little about the product they sell now days. I'd go broke using premium, lol.

 

It’s tuned for 87 so don’t waste your money for daily driving. It’s beneficial to use premium when towing especially in hot weather though. Premium will allow more timing advance and better torque down low. Not sure if Toyota recommends premium for towing but Ford definitely does.

 

Watch any of those videos with the Toyota engineers, they specifically said to use 87 and are proud of the fact (it’sa decent achievement considering twin turbos).

don’t waste your money, especially with current gas prices

Factory tune is for 87

I saw someone just got an extra 60+ whp/wtq from just a custom 93 tune so Toyota DEFINITELY left some power on the table to make the truck more economical and appeal to a wider audience

I wonder how that would affect warranty? I also wonder what components might be put under more stress than they are designed for?

 

Every car I've seen or owned that recommended premium said so inside the fuel door or on the fuel cap.

 

What’s your fuel economy? I bet you’re getting a lot of timing pulled to stop predetonation. 85 at elevation is really only for naturally aspirated engines…

 

Last I checked, I didn't have turbos.

Oh I didn’t notice. I assumed since we’re taking 3rd gen here your comment pertained to 3rd gen. Makes sense for 2nd gen. Turbo engines should always use the minimum required octane. Even at 8000 ft, some turbo engines can make the same absolute manifold pressure as at sea level.

 

Here’s my .2 cents. I live at sea level in SW Washington. I drive a 2023 tundra limited with 35”s. Twin turbo. I drive nice and easy. When I put a full tank of 87 octane my truck gets 13 mpg, when I fill the tank with 92 octane shell, I get 17 mpg. I’ve tried this about 6 complete fill ups. Higher octane all the way…….
……..my 2022 and 2023 tacomas both showed similar results…87 octane in the taco I was getting 17, 92 octane I was consistently getting 22.5 mpg. All my driving is done on i5 at speed right about 67-70 mph.

 

Premium. Running regular the computer will retard the timing of the truck. It will run fine ...just at like 70% and the mileage will take a fair hit. I have never done the math but the extra MPG's might off set the cost difference.

Totally agree. 87 octane combusts easier thus not creating as much Power as 92 octane which combusts harder, thus creating more power and better gas mileage.

 

I had a Tacoma limited. It did better on 93. I could tell a difference. It wasn't a night and day difference. But, I could feel the difference. I have ran 93 in my Tundra several times and can tell no difference. None whatsoever. I run a mixture of 93 and 87 because it makes me feel better.

 

Tuned for 87 run 87 unless you have money to burn. You will get better mileage with ethanol free since it is filler but where I live not enough to make up for the extra 50 cents a gallon.

 

I tried it a couple tanks. Got maybe 2/10 of a mile better which is stastically irrelevant. But I am already averaging 19.5 over 10k miles so my headspace to improve is very limited

I can tell you that I ran 87 octane non-ethanol one way on a recent trip, and 87 octane ethanol blend on the return trip. The non-ethanol provided 4-5 mpg better mileage than the corn juice. Whenever possible, I plan to use real gasoline.

 

Ethanol will always take more fuel to burn the same as its non Ethanol equivalent fuel. But ethanol would make a safe 80+HP gain when tuned for it on my last turbo truck.

 

Not exactly.
With an ignition source, all gasoline combusts at the same rate and has the same energy output.
Gasoline with a higher octane % is more resistant to igniting from heat and pressure alone, without an ignition source.
That's why higher compression/forced induction engines need more octane. To resist ignition from the higher pressure, before the spark occurs.

 

Probably more variables in play than just the fuel. My 129 mile commute to work site I get 2 mpg more going than returning on the same fuel every single time. Removing 10 percent ethanol from a tank will never on its own give you 4-5 mpg more.

 

I am slightly confused to your statement of what is and what is not reasonable. Maybe I am reading this wrong but I would think a ~30% increase in MPG for ~17% in cost is a good thing and a good reason to use the premium. Or that you don't believe that it's possible to get that much MPG from a higher octane? Unless you are measuring the emissions from the exhaust, I doubt you are going to know why 87 is recommended. Better MPG probably isn't equal to "better for environment" me speculates.

This is moot until you do it in the same direction. Driving to downtown I go down a giant hill and it flattens out on I5.

 

Using 87, I was getting a consistent 12 mpg based on the display on the dash. Using 91, that number went up to 14.7

All variables stayed the same. Only thing changed was type of fuel.
